I’m With Stupid

Posted by Sean on November 17, 2008

More like.. I AM STUPID

Why is it when you want to further your education you have to revert your knowledge back to grade school lessons?

Has anyone watched the TV show hosted by Jeff Foxworthy, Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? If you ever want to feel small and uneducated. Take a gander at this show. This show is great preparation for advancing your education, because apparently everything you learned in grade school is what determines if you qualify for advanced formal education.

It seems that the scholars on their high mountains think that if you want to further your education you have to prove your worth by showing you can perform algebra and geometry from grade school.

I mean the last time I checked… I used these skills… err.. Uuhh… IN GRADE SCHOOL!

When is the last time you solved for X?

When is the last time you calculated the perimeter of a square? How about the circumference of a circle?

How about factorials? Did you know that this : 4! Does not mean I’m exclaiming the number 4.

And how about square roots? Do you remember how to divide and multiply them? Or better yet how about dividing and multiplying exponents?

Hell I had to remember how to simple fraction arithmetic!

Do you remember what this symbol is : ? ?

Oh OH… and how about the Pythagorean Theorem?

I bet you use that in your everyday life!

And why is it that when you want to further your education they decide your every day vocabulary is rudimentary and well…just doesn’t cut it.

Instead we want you to learn these words. You know…those words you not only have a hard time understanding, but you can’t even pronounce the damn word!!!!

Aagghhh!

I feel so dumb right now.

(SIGH)

Change of Shift | CoS

Posted by Sean on November 14, 2008

The latest installment of Change of Shift is up over at Crzegrl, with good ole’ Emily. This latest installment is co-hosted by non-other than the infamous Zippy the Lobster and comes to us from Spain!

Emily was nice enough to ‘squeeze’ my submissions in at the very last second. I’m such the procrastinator. Thanks Em!

As always a BIG THANK YOU to Kim over at Emergiblog for getting the CoS party started!

Exercise.. Not the Cure All.

Posted by Sean on November 12, 2008

I was going to save this for another post, but I couldn’t pass this up.

A new study finds that exercise has little to no benefits for patients in heart failure.(link below)

The article continues by explaining heart failure (CHF):

The condition occurs when the heart muscle weakens over time and can no longer pump effectively. Fluid can back up into the lungs, leaving people gurgling and gasping for breath as they struggle to climb stairs or walk around the block.

And then is quoted:

“Exercise is not that magic elixir that we had hoped,” at least for these patients.”

Grr.

I mean seriously. How is exercise alone going to fix and/or correct a disease that took years to develop?

Gee, maybe they should have been exercising from the beginning instead of waiting until their heart started to fail?

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Carpe Diem

Posted by Sean on November 11, 2008

I decided to start a ‘theme’ or ‘topic’ of blog posts called Words of Wisdom (W.O.W.). I’m a very big fan of ‘Quotes’. In fact some would say I’m a tad obsessive about quotes. I collect them. I collect them using Evernote, Microsoft One Note, as well as simply copy/paste to my Microsoft Outlook. I also subscribe to numerous websites that offer ‘Quotes of the Day".

So I thought it would be good to spread the wealth and share my thoughts through the quotes that I enjoy.

I thought I’d start my W.O.W. with probably my all time FAVORITE life-long quote. Well it’s not really a ‘quote’ but a saying.

CARPE DIEM

It’s popularly defined as : SEIZE THE DAY. Here are a couple of internet sources that further define the saying:

Wikipedia

Answers.com

I can’t tell you which happened first. The old ‘chicken before the egg’ conundrum. I CAN tell you my love for this quote was cemented the first time I watched the movie ‘Dead Poet’s Society‘. (and yes I was quite bothered by the fact this movie is dated 1989 – man time flies)

I can’t say I’m a Peaceful Warrior, and i can’t say those cool special effects happen to me. But I can say, I live in the moment. I appreciate all that is given. I take pride in the simplest of things in my life and do my best to never do ‘nothing’.

Wake up everyday like it was on purpose. If you woke up blinking and breathing, congratulations you get another chance!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, that’s why today is called the present!
