A new research study suggests their is a link between the health of your immune system and your circadian rhythm.
“These results suggest that immunity is stronger at night, consistent with the hypothesis that circadian proteins regulate restorative functions such as specific immune responses during sleep, when animals are not engaged in metabolically costly activities”
Hmm..
Maaayybe this could explain why I feel run-down and ‘sick-like’ after I work a couple night shifts?

OK, OK.. this video has multiple versions swimming around the blogosphere. I had to post and share the laughs.
For ANYONE in healthcare, this is quite entertaining and nicely done.

Part of my duties in the Recovery Room includes helping perform pre-operative check-ins. We do the typical JCAHO listed patient identifier checks.
ID bracelet- check
Correct name – check
Correct birth date – check
We go through the pertinent information concerning what specific procedure is being done, please locate the area the surgeon is operating on, who is the surgeon performing the operation, etc.
All the Ga-zillion and one safety checks every hospital is bound to abide by to promote and ensure patient safety and facility compliance.
Each procedure and each surgeon has a set of pre-operative orders they write. In most cases females who are of child-bearing age are required to have a blood test to test for possible pregnancy.
This is of course a 2-fold safety measure for the patient as well as the possible fetus. It’s a fail-safe mechanism for patients who may have the need to not tell ‘the whole truth’ when asked are you, or could you be pregnant.
The other morning this particular female patient was having surgery. And she qualified for the above blood test.
Unfortunately said blood test results were for some reason late. The lateness of these results was putting a wrench into the finely tuned surgical services schedule of procedures. This particular procedure was the first of the day. So by delaying this case.. We are delaying the whole day.
And you can only imagine how everyone was not liking the word ‘delay’.
So one of the Anesthesiologist curtly asked the patient, ‘Is there a possibility of you being pregnant?’
It was a vain attempt at moving things along ‘un-officially’.
This very attractive middle-aged woman looks at the physician, bows her head in embarrassment and quietly states, “It’s been years. Lord knows I’m not pregnant!” and finishes her sentence with an innocent smile.
She had obviously revealed a lil’ more personal information than she cared to share.
The inquisitive anesthesiologist scampers out to the hall area where the surgical team was standing guard, patiently waiting for the ‘Go Sign’. This group lined both sides of the hall, everyone from the scrub techs, to the OR nurses, the surgeon and their assistants, as well as everyone from anesthesiology.
Echoing down the hall you hear, “She Says It’s Been Years!” “Let’s get her in the room” “We can start prepping her”.
I guess the word tact was not in his vocabulary that morning

Why do neighboring units and fellow nurses get so upset at you for calling them to give report?
As if I’ve done something wrong?
I always get greeted with the AAAHHHHAAAAWWW (big sigh) whenever I call to give report. Its apparently my fault this patient is being transferred/admitted to your unit?
OH. I’m sorry.
You’re short staffed? You had a call off? You have multiple things going on at once?
I empathize and can ABSOLUTELY relate. In fact I’m doggie paddling in the very same sea of sh@t. The last time I checked WE’RE ALL trying to survive the same storm. You’re not alone my compadre. We’re all being pulled in every direction possible. We’re all getting abused. We’re all being yelled at. We are all over worked, under paid and definitely under appreciated And yes we’re ALL just a lil’ stressed. But your fellow nurse who is simply doing their job is not at fault. Instead of pointing fingers at the very same people who are in the trenches with you, maybe you could exercise a lil bit of what you need yourself. Patience, tolerance. And understanding. There is strength in numbers. Remember when you point a finger at someone, there are 4 more fingers pointing back at yourself. I’m right here with you my brothers and sisters.

If someone asked you show me a leader? Or show me YOUR leader? Who would it be?
I read this excerpt from a book I’m reading (again) “What It Takes To Be #1 : Vince Lombardi on Leadership” by Vince Lombardi, Jr.
I read the book about a year ago, and I’m interested in re-reading it now. This ‘thought’ was on the very first page of the book and it struck me hard.
I honestly don’t know who my choice would be.
How does one define a leader?
Is a leader defined by their position of employment?
Just because you are in a supervisory role, does that make you a leader?
Is a leader defined by their actions?
Just because you are a ‘take charge’ kind of person, does that make you a leader?
Is a leader defined by their amount of success and/or their amount of failure?
Just because you’ve been successful within your role, does that make you a leader?
I have worked for and worked with a plethora of individuals. I’ve been a member of our nations military service, I’ve worked in retail and have spent the better part of the last 15 years of my life in healthcare. And it’s my belief that none of the answers above MAKE anyone a leader.
I guess it comes down to I know what DOESN’T make a leader. And the above mentioned questions don’t automatically qualify you as a leader.
My definition of a leader is someone who has learned to follow before they were able to lead. They actively listen with one ear to the ground and one ear to the sky. The look at both sides of the coin, not just the most shiny side, nor the most neglected side. Their work is not defined by what they do, how they do it, or who they do it with, but in what manner was it provided. And above all are a genuine human being who actually does care about themselves and the ones they work with and work for.
I’ve been lucky enough to work with a handful of ‘leaders’ in my time on earth, and each one was uniquely qualified to fulfill their leadership position.
How do you define a leader?

Being a slave to testosterone can be a funny thing.
Why do we men have this tendency towards turning everything into a challenge, a contest, or some sort of death-defying feat. A way to test whether or not we’re a ‘girly-man’.
Grocery Shopping
I’m guilty. ![]()
I find myself devising some sort of master plan every week we go shopping. We pull into the drive, and I’m constructing in my mind how my two arms, two hands, and 10 fingers are going to carry every last bag and/or item from my vehicle to the house in one trip.
Yes, every week. ![]()
No matter how many or how few items we purchase, I have to get everything from the car to the house in one trip.
I may have to carry a bag on each finger, as well as tuck additional merchandise under both arms including laying any straggling items across my chest or arms while bracing it with my chin! But Dag-gummit I will only make one trip. ![]()
I am risking life and limb as well as a pulled groin and a sprained finger. But I’m no ‘girly-man’. I can do it.
Luckily we moved to a ranch-style house and I no longer have to walk up the 3 flight’s of stairs and enter through 2 separate doorways!
Being a slave to testosterone can be a funny thing. Hell, it can be down right entertaining some times.
OH.. And if you’re wondering this particular tendency is also the reason why we DON’T get out to ask for directions when we are CLEARLY LOST.

Post operative teaching can be entertaining sometimes.
I understand when I take care of my patients in the PACU, they are in the fog of anesthesia. I understand they don’t have their wits about them.
But why is it when I ask them to, “Deep breathe and cough for me”.
I hear .. ‘UUHHH HHUMM’
No I said cough, not clear your throat. ![]()
Sorry, maybe I just find this funny. ![]()

Paramedics accused of molesting patients – Health care- msnbc.com
It seems there has been an increase in the number of accusations and/or committed sexual crimes on and off duty in the Paramedicine community.
It’s one thing to report disturbing facts but this article bothered me because of the blanket accusation against the Paramedicine community in general.
“It’s a dream job for a sexual predator,” said Greg Kafoury, a Portland, Ore., lawyer who represents three women who were groped by a paramedic. “Everything is there: Women who are incapacitated, so they’re hugely distracted. Medical cover to put your hands in places where, in any other context, a predator would be immediately recognized as such.”
That statement bothers me. I mean that’s a lil overboard and a lil harsh. I thought we were innocent until proven guilty?
I foresee there being a tremendous public scare and public outcry in the wake of this news. I personally know many ‘ambulance attendants’ and this angers me.
