Crossroads

As a nurse my career path has been quite choppy at best. I have always been ‘searching’ for my niche.

I can remember as a student nurse I thought the medical-surgical arena would be my niche. I have a BS in exercise and sports science. I am a Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC). Orthopedics were second nature to me at that point in my life.

I found out how much I didn’t like that type of nursing quickly. Most of my exposure was not fun, exciting, or interesting to me.

I found a fondness with Critical Care. I ‘fit-in’ there quickly. I loved the rollercoaster fast pace, as well as the ‘mechanical’ aspect of that type of nursing. (To this day, I still love all the cool machines and gadgets)

Over the past 3 years I have been in the Critical Care arena, and have enjoyed every minute of it. I assumed this was the type of nursing I would always do ‘to some degree’. Whether it be in the ICU, specialty ICU (cardiac, trauma, etc), PACU, or ED.

I have always kept my options open. Never closing any doors. I still have thoughts (aspirations) of going back to get my BSN, or maybe even MSN.

I’ve thrown around the idea of Anesthesia quite a bit.

But, I can’t say I ever thought outside of that proverbial career box.

My life before healthcare has helped me greatly. Working in retail was miserable while I was there, but in hindsight it taught me so much about myself, about people, about communication, and mostly about leadership.

I spent a handful of years functioning as a manager in the retail world. At one point this responsibility included hundreds of employees.

It seems that my life has come full circle. I am now at a crossroads. That wonderful mister opportunity is knocking on my door.

Sometimes the gravity of a situation makes the decision that much more difficult to make.

Opportunity is funny like that.

Do you open the door and step through? Or do you ignore the knock?

Here’s where I wish I had that ‘see-the-future’ special power.

Wish me luck.

Change of Shift | CoS

Posted by Sean on January 22, 2009

The latest installment of Change of Shift is up over at Emergiblog with none other than the creator of this amazing nursing blog carnival Kim! CoS is back home for this edition.

It was a little disheartening to learn there were not many blog post submissions by med blogging nurses around the blogosphere. Now I know there is not a shortage! I personally visit quite a number of nursing blogs. So I know you’re out there!

Kim left open a discussion on how to proceed with the future of Change of Shift. I would love to hear your feedback, either here or over at the original CoS post.

I am one of the guilty. I was lazy this week and did not submit a post (even though I vaguely remember having 2 or three in mind for CoS)!

As always a BIG THANK YOU to Kim over at Emergiblog for getting the CoS party started!

All my fellow nursing bloggers out there please chime in, we want to hear from you. No matter how much experience you have as a nurse or as a blogger, we want you! You’re blogging may have many reasons, but I’m willing to bet one of them is to have the chance for others to hear your voice!

Let’s hear it!

This is a commercial for T-Mobile and it’s AWESOME. It does have some striking similarities to the original Evolution of Dance video (below):

All for your viewing entertainment.

Obama called 3 different names during ceremony – Yahoo! News

So the inauguration has come and gone. And I was one of the few Americans that did not watch the long, drawn out ceremony yesterday.

I found it very comical that the internet itself began to come to a ‘stand-still’ during those few hours of the inauguration due to the increased multimedia traffic. Work related functions were almost impossible until almost 2pm.

It seems that those in high political places are having a difficult time deciding on what name to use when addressing our president. I guess they tried 3 different versions of his name.

That darn middle name.

It DOES give me an uneasy feeling knowing that my new president’s middle name is shared by a maniacal terrorist.

My hope is that he convinces me it’s only a coincidence.

Just some food for thought.

Develop Your Tolerance

One who cannot tolerate small ills can never accomplish great things.

The road to success is not a straight line, nor is it a climbing escalator like journey. Each step does not always lead to higher ground.

It is riddled with hills and valleys. You will have good days and you will have bad days. You will fail before your succeed.

Success is gained from accomplishing great things, and success comes to those with tolerance.

One Chance

Posted by Sean on January 20, 2009

Give people more than they expect and do it cheerfully.

Marry a man/woman you love to talk to. As you get older, their conversational skills will be as important as any other.

Don’t believe all you hear, spend all you have or sleep all you want.

When you say, ‘I love you,’ mean it.

When you say, ‘I’m sorry,’ look the person in the eye.

Be engaged at least six months before you get married.

Believe in love at first sight.

Never laugh at anyone’s dreams. People who don’t have dreams don’t have much.

Love deeply and passionately. You might get hurt but it’s the only way to live life completely.

In disagreements, fight fairly. No name calling.

Don’t judge people by their relatives.

Talk slowly but think quickly.

When someone asks you a question you don’t want to answer, smile and ask, ‘Why do you want to know?’

Remember that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

Say ‘bless you’ when you hear someone sneeze.

When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.

Remember the three R’s: Respect for self; Respect for others; and Responsibility for all your actions.

Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.

When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

Smile when picking up the phone. The caller will hear it in your voice

Spend some time alone.
