The Be All Cure-All for Hiccups

Posted by Sean on January 18, 2009

image

So, I know you’ve heard them. There are a ton of ‘remedies’ out there. Here is one site that boasts quite a list.

I personally have tried a number of them. Not only as the victim but as the healer. Everything from the ‘hold your breath’ intervention, to the ‘hold your breath – and scare you’ remedy. I think some of these remedies are simply created for the entertainment. Like the ‘take a drink of water from the opposite side of the glass’ suggestion. (Yep, tried it and witnessed others getting a shower they didn’t expect) I could make an entire blog post on just the endless list of remedy ‘scams’ out there.

Even the ‘bitters’ and sours’ method’ is not the most accurate method of hiccup relief. (From my years working at the bar in college)

A couple of years ago I stumbled upon a method that has been 100% successful for me and anyone else that has tried it. (Yep, I think I was at a bar at the time of this discovery)

For those of you who want to stop wasting your time and extinguish that repetitive ‘shock and awe’ of your diaphragm, here is my ‘secret’ method:

You need a full glass of water. I think you need at least an 8 oz glass (not that I’ve tried it any other way). It can be warm or cold. I don’t think water temperature is a gauging factor. Get a paper towel or a napkin and cover the top of the glass. Now drink the ENTIRE glass of water through the paper towel (napkin). (No. Not from the opposite side of the glass) Drink it like a normal human being.

A couple key points here:

  • The paper towel or napkin has to be ‘somewhat’ porous, but thick. A piece of chancy material will make the effort null and void (I’ve learned this the hard way after drinking multiple glasses of water)
  • You HAVE to drink the entire glass of water. No cheating or else it doesn’t work
  • You will have to literally ‘suck’ the water through the material for it to work ( I firmly believe this is the key to the entire operation)
  • Yes, you will be out of breath and almost choking to get that last gulp or two down.
  • It will feel like you are going to hiccup again. (I think it’s purely a mental mind trick) But you won’t hiccup.

I wish I had a good scientific rationale that explained why this method works. My guess is it has something to do with the negative pressure you have to create when ‘sucking’ down the glass of water. Like I said, I’m guessing.

All I know, is that THIS WORKS. If done correctly, IT WORKS.

inaugural_rehearsal_jan_09_1.jpgOn Tuesday millions of people will flock to Washington DC to see President-elect Barack Obama sworn in as our 44th President. But what if you can’t get there? Well, turns out in this digital age it’s not a problem; as Obama recently pointed out "you don’t have to brave the crowds and commotion in order to participate in this celebration."

While various news outlets will be streaming the event, we’ve compiled this list of online resources to make it easier for those of you who wish to navigate the inauguration virtually. Included are Inaugural Week events, where to watch the Inauguration online, how to stay up-to-date with news, what to do if you’re heading to DC, and links to interesting and [we hope] fun sites.

Art Imitating Life… Life Imitating Art…

Posted by Sean on January 18, 2009

4 stabbed during club’s party for ‘Notorious’ film – Yahoo! News

WTF?! So we idolize a  ‘rapper’ who’s background and practices were questionable at best. He is tragically murdered  in a ‘gang-type’ shooting, which re-emphasizes our hypothesis.

Years later they decide to idolize this same rapper by making a autobiographical movie about his life. Producing a lack-luster attempt at explaining or proving his worth as a ‘good’ human being who fought his way to the top.

And then life decides to imitate the art that was imitating life.

Enough said.

My Weekly Web Mad Props

Posted by Sean on January 17, 2009

So I hope everyone’s week was warmer than mine. I realized around Thursday that I failed to ‘collect’ any ‘mad props’ for the week. So this post may be random and short. (Not that you’re complaining) Raised Eyebrow

I spent more of my ‘Web 2.0’ time on FriendFeed this week. I ‘stumbled upon’ a particular song by Imogen Heap. (I ended up knowing the song, and yes I like it) The point of my story is I was re-directed to this SNL parody:

Now I like SNL, and it had Adam Sandberg in it. Everyone should remember him from this. I laughed at this parody but I ‘didn’t get it’, until I found this video which explains it all.

***

The TV geek in me had a small funeral this week with the exit of Gill Grissom from CSI. The show will NOT be the same without him or his character.

***

Did you know that the Pittsburgh Steelers are in the playoffs this week? The mayor of Pittsburgh knows.

***

So, are you in an unfamiliar place? Need to use the bathroom?

***

I’m using Posterous quite often now. Here is a great tutorial on how to utilize the autopost function from Posterous for your blog.

***

This one’s for crzegrl and Trauma Junkie. Looking for concerts in your area?

Lastly, here is a flowchart for things to say during sex. (yes you read that right)

Have a great night everyone! I’m outta here!

It IS 2009 right?

Posted by Sean on January 17, 2009

clip_image001

I’ve said it before. I’m a lil’ slow on the uptake occasionally.

I was flabbergasted this morning when I learned that segregation still exists in my country.

Actor Freeman foots prom bill in Sundance doc – Yahoo! News

It seems a small town in Mississippi still conducts two high school proms, one for the white students and one for the black students??!!

It IS 2009 right? It HAS been over 50 yrs since the Supreme Court’s decision right?

I grew up in a very didactic and racially integrated town. I know first hand what went on and still goes on behind the scenes. And this story angers me greatly.

Isn’t it IRONIC that they decided to ‘integrate’ their prom around the SAME time a certain presidential candidate – turned – president – elect crossed these vary same barriers?

Change is good thing.

Hang On

Posted by Sean on January 16, 2009

Hang on longer than your competition.

Victory does not always go to the strongest, or the smartest. Those who are victorious are usually the ones who’s will cannot be extinguished.

“I will not give up” always trumps “I want to win”

Here’s to hanging on.
