A Mixture of Thoughts

Posted by Sean on February 13, 2009

I thought this picture was perfect. It pretty much sums up what’s been going on with my blog the past couple weeks.

A mixture of thoughts –> which lead to a mixture of blog posts.

I was blogging about anything that crossed my path. If I read it, I shared it. If I saw it, I shared it. I not only shared it here on my Blog, but I was sharing my content via my Posterous page, as well as my Tumblr page, then it was rolling over into my FriendFeed stream, which lead to a lot of tweets on my Twitter account.

I didn’t even mention my Swurl page.

The reason for my post is I have a whole lot of random bloginess going on. And a whole LOT of repetition going on. Is anyone getting sick of it? Am I double talking a lot? Am I double posting?? Am I a repeat content offender?

I love sharing all the stuff I come across, but I also don’t want to detract from my blog. I really like the life it’s starting to take. I still blog plenty about nursing, and very rarely about fitness (although I have one ready).

I guess I’m being critical of myself. My Strong Medicine has been more My Strong Shtuff.

I’d love to hear my readers opinion? Keep doing what I’m doing? Are you liking what you’re seeing? Are you tired of the random shtuff I’m sending? Should I get a lil more focused?

I need some input. Please leave me a comment, even if you normally do not. Please let me hear your thoughts

Because in the end it’s you, my readers, that are ultimately affected.

Thank you as always

Are You Smart AS a 2nd Grader??

OK. OK. This is totally NOT a blogging ritual. But, I couldn’t stand to NOT share this with all my readers. I want to know if you are able to do this task within the 2 minute time frame.
Sad to say, I could not. I did complete the task, just not within 2 minutes.
I apologize for veering away from the ‘typical’ blogging material. But, then again, my blog is anything but ‘typical’.

Please follow the link above.

What Part Do You Play?

Always strive to be Pro-active instead of Re-active.

When problems and challenges arise, as they often do. Remember to bring solutions to the table. There is a difference between constructive criticism and complaining. The next time you want to point a finger at someone or something, remember,  there are 3 fingers pointing back at you.finger_pointing_OW

Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem

The Worst Critic

Posted by Sean on February 10, 2009

Self_Critic_by_robertllynchImage Source: Deviant Art

You aren’t expected to know everything. So quit beating yourself up for forgetting something from nursing 101. Quit being so mad or disappointed in yourself when you slip-up and make a mistake, no matter how simple or complex it may be.

Nope. You aren’t expected to know everything.

In fact you are NEVER expected to know everything. You ARE however expected to acquire the tools, the forward thinking and the instinct to find out who does.

Meaning, when you don’t have the answer to the question, or don’t have the set of skills to accomplish the task, you should be able to determine and or find someone or something that can or does.

There are two things you learn as new nurse freshly off of orientation:

1st – Do no harm. At the end of your orientation you will be safer. You will acquire the skills and knowledge to SAFELY take care of your patient.

2nd – You will not know the answer to everything, but you will know where to find the answer.

Confidence vs. Arrogance

Posted by Sean on February 10, 2009

There is a fine line between the two.

Unfortunately it’s perception lays in the eyes of its beholder. While you think you are being confident, other will scowl at your arrogance.

As a nurse, especially a new nurse, be sure to listen more than you talk. No matter how much you think you know, no matter how much you think you don’t know, you will NEVER know everything, so don’t act like it.

Yes, we all are ‘strong’ nurses. We all have ‘strong’ personalities. But, there is greater strength in numbers. You and everyone else are all members of the same team.

Smugness is not a quality anyone likes. And I firmly believe we don’t elicit this arrogant-type behavior on purpose. I too like to ‘flaunt it, when I got it’. I too want to flex my ‘skillz’ when the opportunity arises. But don’t mask an eagerness to prove yourself with old fashion pompousness.

A new nurse is not simply a New Graduate (GN), not just a GN who recently passed their state board exam (NCLEX). A new nurse can simply be ‘new’ to the floor. New to the unit, new to your (hospital) employer. We all have a unique set of skills we bring with us, no matter how long or short our time line of knowledge is. We all can contribute in a positive, proactive manner.

At the end of the day if you put the patient and your team before yourself and your ‘skillz’, no one will ever accuse you of arrogance, nor will the question your confidence.

At What Cost?

Posted by Sean on February 10, 2009

Kerri Mucci over at Stressed Out Nurses shares a pivotal piece of research information by the ANA on the price ticket on the nursing profession.

Study findings calculate that adding 133,000 nurses to the acute care hospital setting would save 5,900 patients’ lives per year and result in more than $1.3 billion in hospital savings, which translates to approximately $9,900 in savings per additional nurse each year.

Thanks Kerri.

And to answer her question. I’m not at all surprised. I don’t think there is a nurse out there who is.

Kvetch-Free

Posted by Sean on February 9, 2009

I want to thank sandsurf for bringing this program to my attention. I pride myself on being a positive person, but according to research we all complain on the average of 10 or more times a day!
That’s astonishing!
I for one am interested in learning more about myself.
I can honestly say I encounter way too many complaints in my daily life, especially at work lately!!!
My plan is to apply the program to my personal actions, and roll it forward onto my fellow co-workers.
I am very excited.
What are your thoughts?!
