Welcome To Our _ool

Posted by Sean on May 17, 2009

Oh c’mon, you know you’ve seen this sign before at your local public pool.

“Did you notice there was no ‘P’ in it. Please try and keep it that way. Thank You”

According to a new survey (Courtesy of Healthbolt) we the public aren’t keeping up our end of that bargain.

This isn’t good. Swimming in unclean water can lead to recreational water illnesses (RWIs) such as  diarrhea, respiratory illness, and ear and skin infections. Those most at risk are Children, pregnant women, and  any one with a compromised immune systems

I vaguely remember getting ‘swimmer’s ear’ quite often. And now that I think about it, at the height of the summer when me and all my friends were playing in the pool having a good time. I can’t rightfully remember any of us getting out of the pool (during the middle of any game) for a ‘bathroom break’?!

You DO remember all that water you swallowed?

Things that make you go hmmm.

Sick

Do We HAVE To Have A ‘Scapegoat’ Answer For Obesity?

Posted by Sean on May 16, 2009

Why must we continue to dissect and study the ‘WHY’ of obesity? Whether in children or adults, obesity is obesity in my humble opinion.

The last time I checked obesity is due to consuming more calories than you burn off. Plain and simple.

Yep, there are ‘Ga-Zillion’ other contributing factors involved that can help or hinder your likelihood of being obese. Everything from family history to the environment. But let’s get serious here. Your obesity is not someone or something else’s fault. You are the one that sticks the food in your mouth (consume calories). You are the one that ‘moves’ (burns calories).

No one else.

So why are we still researching the ‘WHY’?

We all know why, we just don’t like the answer.

Ever Made A Mistake? Did You ‘Pay’ For It?

Posted by Sean on May 16, 2009

So, when you were in your 20’s did you make any mistakes? Did you have any lapse in your judgment? About anything, anything at all?

I’m pretty sure you did. Heck, I’m pretty sure I we still do! We all have moments of ‘idiocy’.

After the ‘moment’ we pick our face up off the floor, brush off our shoulders and figure out what the heck happened, and did anyone get hurt. Namely anyone besides yourself! Our actions always have consequences (action = reaction) and in my opinion. The level of idiocy can and does affect those around you, your loved ones, your friends, and even complete strangers. So after the smoke settles we all have to take stock in how ‘stupid’ we really are were.

Maybe it’s just me, but if my ‘mo-moment’ (yes another phrase I have coined) only affects or harms me personally, then I get what I deserve. If on the other hand your ‘mo-moment’ harms or hurts someone other than yourself… you have more damage control ahead of you. God forbid you physically harm someone because you were an idiot. Our ‘mo-moments’ have the potential to seriously affect and change those around us so if all you did was mess something up for yourself, congratulations you get another chance. Another chance to NOT do it again. (This is excluding severe incidents which I won’t care to discuss)

Which brings me to Michael Phelps. You remember him don’t you? Yeah, he was that insignificant swimmer-guy who nonchalantly won 8 Olympic Gold medals in the summer of 2008… broke all kinds of individual and team swimming event records.. holds more ‘records’ in his sport at the ripe age of 23 then most get there entire career.

Oh he’s also the kid professional athlete who screwed up and was caught smoking marijuana.

Via Wikipedia:

In early 2009, Phelps admitted to "behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment" following the publication of a photo by the British tabloid, News of the World, showing him using a bong, a device used for smoking marijuana.[18] Following an investigation, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department announced on February 16 that Phelps would not be prosecuted in connection with the incident because there was not enough evidence.[19] USA Swimming suspended Phelps from swimming competitively for three months, and Kellogg’s announced that it would not renew his endorsement contract.[20] According to Vanno, which tracks companies’ brand reputations, Kellogg’s brand reputation was significantly damaged after dropping Michael Phelps.[21]

Sounds like a lapse in judgment? Yep, definitely a ‘mo-moment’.

Well he served out his suspension, he fully admitted his idiocy, he never lied about his action or tried to cover it up, he never made it into something else. He paid his dues, lost endorsements, he served his suspension all the while never belly-aching about it. In fact he almost decided to step away from the sport he loves at one point due to that unfortunate ‘mo-moment’.

Well Friday was his first time ‘back in the saddle’, and he proved once and for all this kid has got the makings of greatness.

I would hope by now they would let go of his ‘mo-moment’ and move on. Yes, I too berated the kid when it happened. But, I admit I was wrong. I mean this young man has had to deal with pressures that I can’t even imagine. Being a professional in the ‘limelight’ in your early 20’s has got to be tough. And in my opinion, his lapse of judgment was bad, but nothing compared to what some other ‘hollywood-types’ and ‘professional athletes’ have done. The boy simply harmed himself and his image, nothing more. He didn’t physically hurt anyone, didn’t damage anyone emotionally, no did he KILL anyone.

I say we cut him just a little slack and let him do his damn-thang.

What do you think?

I don’t know about you, but this seems to be quite the common occurrence.

How’s the state of the refrigerator at work? You know, the one everyone shares and stores their so-called lunches?

When is the last time it was cleaned?

Be careful when cleaning, you may have to call HAZMAT!

This Is What Our Children Are Learning

Posted by Sean on May 13, 2009

gun

Settle your disputes with a weapon, no matter how old you are. If you have a disagreement threaten them and anyone that gets in your way with a gun.

Apparently that is what this little girl did when her younger sister wouldn’t ‘play’ with her. She threatened her younger sister and her grandmother. Oh, she is only 11 years old.

Isn’t there something seriously wrong here?

Excuses. The Next Time You Complain.. Think Again

Posted by Sean on May 12, 2009

The next time you complain, or whine, or belly-ache about ANYTHING in your life… I want you to take a look at this veteran who curtly reminds us of how GOOD we all have it.

Is something too hard? Are you too tired? This hero reminds me of how precious life is, and no matter how bad you think you have it.. it could be so much worse. Take the gifts you are given and run with them, if you can’t run then you walk. And when someone tell you you can’t walk. Prove them wrong.

Thank you Phil. Best of luck to you.

Hard Worker or Just Hard Headed?

Posted by Sean on May 12, 2009

9456_sick_woman_with_the_flu_walking_around_with_a_runny_nose_and_tissues.jpg

Cough! Cough! Cough!

Sniffffff!

Blllfffffffssssssttttt! (That’s the sound you make blowing your nose if you didn’t know Winking)

Excuse me? Are you sick? Do you have a cold? You don’t have a case of the FLU do you?!

Waiting

Then what the HELL are you doing at work?! (I’m referencing this to my fellow nurses, but this applies to ANYONE!)

Why do we insist on going in and working when we are sick? I understand we have labeled ‘sick’ with many different levels of severity, but the bottom line is.. uuhh you’re sick.

Now I’m not talking about your typical hay-fever allergy-type runny-nose eye-watering annoyance. I mean sick. You have the body aches. You may or may not have a fever. You’re sneezing your head off. You’re cough so much your face stay a permanent shade of read and your chest and back start to hurt from all the coughing and sneezing.

This type of cold has you getting rid of all those ‘colorful’ secretions through your Kleenex. (Shades of green and yellow ring any bells?) Being truly sick and not playing hooky.

If this is you (and I used to as guilty). Then why in the world do you think going to work is a good idea?

Oh.. I see. You’ll feel guilty for ‘stiffing’ your co-workers with some added ‘work’. You hate being a burden to anyone. You know how it feels when you go to work and there is a call-off. So you hate being the person responsible. I get it.

But just how effective ARE you at work? How sharp is that fogged brain of yours? Is your medicine-head still floating? Oh, I forgot. Still sneezing and coughing in a ridiculous manner? How many times have you washed your hands in between each cough and sneeze? How many fomites have you infected with you germs? (gee I guess you want to spread the wealth?)

Wait, so you went to work to not ‘screw’ your co-workers with a burden…. buuuuut you’re now at work spreading your ‘love’ (germs) so that your co-workers can feel as great as you!

So when you DO get better, given incubation time, transmission type, immune system capabilities, and the simple game of odds, your co-worker will be the one sick! And then they will play it smart and actually call-off! Doh

So who are you really helping here?

Are you still going to work when you’re sick? I don’t.
