The Importance of Exercise Hasn't Changed

Posted by Sean on July 8, 2009

It still amazes me that the public needs further proof and continual reminders as to the obvious health benefits of exercise activity.

The ACSM has eloquently summed it up in a most recent study:

The guidelines state that all adults should avoid inactivity, that some physical activity is better than none, and that adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits. However, the guidelines emphasize that for most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and/or longer duration

I love how we’ve gone from the over-done splitting-hairs debate on ‘how much’ exercise is appropriate to simply visiting the opposite end of the spectrum. Now, we’re not saying you need to do this much, for this long. No, now we’re simply asking you to move. Oh, and the more you move, the better it is.

Yes folks, simply avoid inactivity. That’s how lazy we are. That’s how bad our health problems have become. We’ve taken the minimalist attitude.

Simply do something.

Something is better than nothing.
