Keep It Professional, No Matter How Personal

Posted by Sean on July 9, 2009

We nurses have a strong passion for our patients. Sometimes we can go overboard when it comes to advocating for our patients, especially when we feel the patients needs aren’t being met.

This is what not to do. (Shout Out to ER Stories)

Keep it professional people.

Keep it professional.

Drive To The Conditions

Posted by Sean on July 8, 2009

This is by far one of the boldest statements of safe driving I’ve seen. A billboard that ‘bleeds’ when it rains.

Dry Conditions:

When it rains:

If that doesn’t slow you down while driving… I don’t know what will.

Check out the link below for the video showing the billboard in action.

Great Stuff.

The Importance of Exercise Hasn't Changed

Posted by Sean on July 8, 2009

It still amazes me that the public needs further proof and continual reminders as to the obvious health benefits of exercise activity.

The ACSM has eloquently summed it up in a most recent study:

The guidelines state that all adults should avoid inactivity, that some physical activity is better than none, and that adults who participate in any amount of physical activity gain some health benefits. However, the guidelines emphasize that for most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and/or longer duration

I love how we’ve gone from the over-done splitting-hairs debate on ‘how much’ exercise is appropriate to simply visiting the opposite end of the spectrum. Now, we’re not saying you need to do this much, for this long. No, now we’re simply asking you to move. Oh, and the more you move, the better it is.

Yes folks, simply avoid inactivity. That’s how lazy we are. That’s how bad our health problems have become. We’ve taken the minimalist attitude.

Simply do something.

Something is better than nothing.

Tinkerin’ With ReTweetin’

Posted by Sean on July 7, 2009

clip_image001

So I’ve been using Tweetmeme‘s retweet button for a short time now. It seems to have it’s use. I’ve used it on my own blog as well as click it for a retweet on other blog’s I visit. Tweetmeme has developed and tweaked the function of the Tweetmeme button in the short time that I’ve been using it.

Customization has always been the one drawback. Customizing the actual button itself, not just its size.

Enter – BackType .

It seems that BackType is trying it’s best to keep there finger right on top of the pulse of the discussions throughout the internets. They now have their very own ‘Tweetmeme’ button – the Tweetcount button . Same look and feel, except it of course utilizes BackType’s service. The one thing it has that I liked is the customizable button.

So I’m tinkering.

Tinkering with the color.

Figuring out if the Tweetcount button is all it’s cracked up to be. Is the Tweetcount any better or worse than Tweetmeme? If not, then the Tweetcount wins for customization.

Besides I already use BackType for tracking conversations, everything from FriendFeed, Blog Posts and other Web 2.0 interfaces. I just started using the BackType Connect Plugin as well for my blog.

So we’ll see how it goes.

I just can’t decide on what color my Tweetcount button should be.

Hmm.

You’re A Nurse Right?

Posted by Sean on July 6, 2009

Why are his hands swollen?!

Why am I coughing?

Why does her side hurt?

Is this bad?

These are the arbitrary-like but serious questions I get asked from my ‘non-medical’ friends and family. Fraught with good intentions and a need-to-know mentality, I somehow get ‘consulted’ to answer the ‘why’ questions for the medically and physically unexplainable signs and symptoms that they or their friends experience.

I don’t know if I should feel blessed or cursed sometimes. I am of course not a doctor, nor do I play one on television. I cannot offer medical advice. It’s not only dangerous but extremely illegal.

I AM a Registered Nurse. Yes, I have specialized medical education and training. And yes, I have treated and cared for many patient’s with many illnesses. But, no I do not have an answer for everything.

I will offer suggestions and can talk of my own experiences, but dodging the flurry of bullet-like questions can be very challenging. I do not, and cannot offer medical advice or give medical direction. I’m not qualified, nor permitted to do so.

My answer always ends with the phrase, ‘You should REALLY have them follow up with their family physician’ (whomever they may be).

And with a perturbed grimace I always hear, " Well… I thought you were a nurse?!"

Quieting my offended inner-voice, I calmly reply, "Why Yes, I am."

The Nightshift And A Room Darkening Panel??

Posted by Sean on July 5, 2009

IMG00222

Room darkening panel??!!

When and where did this item crop up? Where was this when I was working straight night shift? Uh- where was this when I was flip-flopping from days and nights?

I have hope now.

On top of sticking the cardboard-like insulation into my windows, I have the option to use these new-fangled Room Darkening panels that are basically the frilly more eye-pleasing version of sticking towels over your windows to block out the sun. Something that is key to sleeping in the middle of the day when working the night shift.

Yes, yours truly would push-pin dark (preferably black in color) towels over his windows to give the false sense of ‘night’ when attempting mid-day sunshine sleep. Working nights, while the shift itself is a whole different animal, comes with the challenges of actually getting some rest and sleep when the rest of the world is awake, active, and living the life of all the normal human beings out there.

I still to this day applaud any and everyone who can do this shift as a living. You become so disconnected from society. I still don’t know how ya do it.

So here’s to better hope for me and my lack-there-of sleep during my rotating day-night shift with my new job in the coming months.

Oh by the way.. These were found at Wal-Mart last night.

Carpe Diem
