Wholly Carp!(Yes Megen I stole your saying) This has been quite the past few days. First I get to reveal my official bloginess over at Scrubs. And now I find out one of my posts made it on RNCentral. I’m featured at #2 on there post titled : 100 Blog Posts You Should Read Before Going to Nursing School ! it was my post about the benefits of online learning .

I must thank Keith over at Digital Doorway and congratulate him for not only making me aware of the list, but for also being a part of it! Keith is under the sub-section of ‘Getting Through School’ with his post titled : Surviving Nursing School.

*UPDATE*

It seems I missed another fellow blogger who made the list. Please be sure to also read Reality Rounds contribution under the sub-section of Nursing Challenges titled : Sinking.

After discovering the shady workings, I have removed the original hyperlink to the article. I did leave the link-love for my fellow bloggers, but they link to their original blog posts, not to the RNCentral post. Sorry folks.

Strong Work for Reality Rounds!

Way to go Keith!

And way to go me!

Be sure to take a gander at this must see list.

15 Free Online Tools to Help You Set Goals and Keep Track of Them

Posted by Sean on August 30, 2009

“This is a guest post from Michelle Fabio a fellow writer and blogger. Thanks Michelle!”

Whether you’re aiming to scale Mount Everest, lose 10 pounds, stop smoking, become a nurse anesthetist, or simply take the stairs more often at work, pinpointing your goals and then tracking your progress and setbacks will help you achieve them.

How, you may ask? Well, the positive steps you’ve taken will help you stay motivated, and acknowledging the negatives will highlight the areas you need to work on.

While there are probably hundreds of books that can help you set goals and track your progress, why not start out with the free stuff? Here they are:

15 Free Online Tools to Help You Set Goals and Keep Track of Them

1. 43 Things: One of the most popular online goal tools, this social networking site allows users to set goals for themselves, keep track of them, see who else is pursuing the same goals, and also offer encouragement to others.

2. 8goals: Online software that allows you to set and track goals — and even offers ideas for goals if you’re looking for inspiration.

3. eLifeList: This site revolves around the concept of the "Life List," which includes any and every goal you set for yourself in your lifetime; you can add photos, videos, and running comments regarding your goals and share everything with fellow users.

4. FitDay.com: For those who want to get in shape, this is a free diet and weight loss journal to track foods, exercise, weight loss, and goals; this site has over 2 million members.

5. Goal Setting Tool: A work sheet offered through AssistGuide Information Services and the National Family Caregivers Association that asks you to answer simple questions to help pinpoint your goals.

6. Goalsetting1: A social community that revolves around goals; also offers handy graphs to better chart your progress.

7. The Goals Grid: Easy to follow method developed by Fred Nickols of Distance Consulting LLC that helps you identify your goals and place them on a grid to help clarify your objectives.

8. The Goals Guy: This site has a lot of paid services available, but dig a bit and you’ll find lots of great free advice on setting and sticking to goals, particularly the Ten Commandments of Goal Setting.

9. iijournal: Online tool that lets you privately track goals and personal experiences in journal format.

10. Joe’s Goals: Simple tool for keeping track of goals using checkmarks, smiley faces, and frowns; no download required. Track your score, use Joe’s Logbook for journal entries, and share entries with friends if you like.

11. Life Science Tools: A free account here lets you set and track "targets," and can also provide you with daily email reminders if you wish.

12. My Life Changes: Just as its name suggests, this site helps you pinpoint where you would like to make changes in various aspects of your life and helps you achieve them by offering tracking tools as well as great general, inspiring information.

13. MyProgress: Currently in Beta with all features free to users, this tool allows you to observe and analyze your productivity, financial progress, skills and knowledge, and more.

14. stickK: With the slogan "Change starts now," this site is centered on the idea of the "commitment contract," and even lets you set monetary stakes (or not if you don’t want to) for achieving your goals.

15. Wesabe: For those who want to set and keep track of financial goals, this offers ways to track your expenses and purchases and also has lots of good information on saving money; there’s even an iPhone application.

What are your goals and what steps are you taking to achieve them?

Halp a Fellow Nurse Blogger Out

Posted by Sean on August 30, 2009

For those of you (us) that have been around the blogosphere for a lil’ while you may remember Sean from http://nursesean.com. He was the student nurse who eventually made it into the ICU world. A great blog that chronicled his journey from student nurse to critical care nurse.

Remember him?

Well he disappeared for a lil’ while for reasons only he could describe. Well Heeeeeeeeeee’s baaaaaaaack.

He’s still truckin’ along in the Critical Care world, but he changed his blog, changed the name, and now needs some help ‘getting found’ again.

He now resides here: The Intensive Art . Here’s a lil bit about him: (from his about page on his blog)

I am a 30 year-old (male) nurse. I finished my Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing in December 2006. I spent two years working on a busy surgical unit before landing my dream job as an ICU nurse in March 2008. It was an extremely tough transition, but I eventually settled in! I will soon be finishing a two year certificate program in critical care nursing. Once this is done, I plan to write my critical care certification exam.

As for my personal interests, I love to play with my dog and take him for walks in the park. I am an avid television watcher; obsessed with reality and medical shows. This year I took up camping, and enjoyed it immensely. I adore David Lynch movies (Twin Peaks, Mulholland Dr.). And how could I forget to mention my love of Broadway musicals!

He always had that great story-telling ability. He’s having some difficult times with his new job and all that it entails. And well he does have a kick-a@s name. :)

Take a gander at his blog.. and heck maybe even add his RSS feed to your reading material.

Here’s your link love Sean!

Welcome back buddy!

Crazy Things On The Internet

Posted by Sean on August 29, 2009

So I’m doing some light research on the stages of development. A little bit of Erickson and some Piaget thrown into the mix and I come across this graph of links on the bottom of a certain webpage??

Some of these things just don’t belong? (Picture me singing this tune)

Can you figure it out?

I’m a Featured Blogger! It’s Official!

Posted by Sean on August 29, 2009

Or should I say I’m now a ‘House Blogger’.

I briefly mentioned it a while back when discussing my endeavors with school and blogging, etc. It’s official now. Heck it’s been official for a couple weeks now.

clip_image001

I am now a regular blogger for the new website Scrubs – The Nurse’s Guide to Good Living.

I must disclose that I am a ‘contracted’ blogger, therefore I do get paid for my contributions to this website and blog.

It’s an awesome consortium for the ‘Nurse Today’. It has a little bit of everything-you name it. It tackles all the things that we nurses come across. Anything you encounter: Career, Healthy Living, Beauty & Style (What to Wear), Relationships, and Life Outside of Work.

I originally came across the website over the summer by way of Twitter. Back then I was still in my ‘Wellness’ and ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ mode. I was contributing some stuff that tackled the topic of staying healthy and getting in shape for Nurses and our busy lifestyle. They ironically had a need/want for a male nurse… a male nurse blogger in fact! Well Gee? Guess what? I’m a nurse. I’m a male. And I blog??

Ta-Da!

So I will be a regular contributor to this new awesome site that has an infinite amount of potential to be THE HUB for nurses on the web. A great resource for the new and seasoned nurse as well as the new and seasoned blogger(who happens to blog). The longer you hang out in the blogosphere the more and more nurses you find that share your desires. It is truly amazing how many of us are out there.

I will be sharing my stuff I have posted here on my personal blog on the Scrubs website, and vice versa. I’m going to try and keep it fair, simple and of course interesting!

Here is my ‘spot’ on the website. I am of course listed as the ‘Male Nurse‘. And here is the link to my RSS Feed.

What do ya think?!!

HOLD YOUR BREATH!!!!

Posted by Sean on August 24, 2009

So due to my wife losing a lil itty-bitty bet last night, I now get to show you her beautiful face!!!

Up until now she has been extremely adamant about not showing her face in my Web 2.0 world! Well all bets are off my dear!!!

Whether she likes it or not. I’m extremely proud that she’s my wife, and to this day I still don’t understand why she chose me.

My life has never been better since she became a permanent part of it.

To sound cheesy and sentimental she truly completes me and without her I’d be lost. She is my breath, she is my everything.

Thanks for saying yes!

I love you Jill (my Angel)

What Does A Nursing Student and a Member of The Armed Forces Have In Common??

Posted by Sean on August 23, 2009

Hospital Corners.
This is coming from someone who filled both those pairs of shoes. I have vivid memories of learning this ‘by the numbers’ in boot camp. Then being reminded of them during our ‘orientation’ week as a ‘first year’.
I honestly can’t decide which was more ‘crisp’. I think the hospital corner evolved and was passed on from someone like myself. Someone who walked the halls of a hospital and donned a pair of ‘jungle boots‘.

Either way this video does a good job of explaining the creation of the hospital corner.

Just imagine, in boot camp, you had this down to a reflex. I think I remember getting ‘er dun in less time than it took me to get dressed.

Ahh.. the nightmares memories. Heh heh.
