  • Working an entire 8 hour shift without the benefit of a potty or food break.
  • Staying over your shift to deliver the baby you have been helping to labor all day.
  • Working all holidays and weekends while your friends and family are celebrating or relaxing without you.
  • Varicose veins.
  • Orthopedic shoes.
  • Support hose.
  • Addictions to caffeine
  • Staying over your shift to ease the end of life of your patient you have known for months.
  • Coming in on your day off to bring all your old baby clothes to the needy family you are caring for on Pediatrics.
  • Answering the phone and coming in to work, even though your caller-ID outed your hospital.
  • Coming in  to work at 2am four days before your wedding due to a frantic call from the night charge nurse.
  • This is an awesome list.. and it’s only part of it. Please be sure to visit Reality Rounds for the complete list. Kudos to her.
And a great big THANK YOU to all my fellow nurses out there working today. Thank You again for your sacrifices.

    Happy Labor Day!

Posted by Sean on September 7, 2009

    labor-union-7

Like most of society, my view of Labor Day has always been “Aww.. the end of summer”. I thought I’d enlighten just a few of you us on how significant Labor Day really is.

“Most of us regard Labor Day as the last “hurrah!” of Summer—a three-day weekend to make one final getaway before autumn encroaches, or at least an excuse to fire up the grill one last time. But Labor Day was originally founded in 1882 as not only a celebration (with picnics and parades in New York City’s Reservoir Park) for the working man, but also as a public rally to gain support for an eight-hour work day. (Thanks to the Industrial Revolution, it was not unusual for companies to require workers to stay on the job for 10 to 12 hour shifts with no overtime pay.) For the next few years, workers who chose to march in parades on the first Monday in September took the off without pay in order to participate. Oregon was the first state to recognize Labor Day as a legal paid holiday in 1887.

A big Thank You to the folks over at Mental Floss.

    Enjoy your Holiday!

    My Friend In China…

Posted by Sean on September 6, 2009

    clip_image001

I was at work the other day. I was in the Pre-Op area for the morning.

“For those of you who are not aware, I currently work in a small-community hospital in the PACU. Along with my Recovery Room duties, I also ‘moonlight’ helping out in the Pre-Operative stage of surgery. We do the Pre-Op checklist, JCAHO mandated requirements as well as hospital-driven requirements to ensure patient safety is first and foremost as well as certify everyone involved in the surgical process is on the ‘same page’ so-to-say.”

So there I am asking all the typical questions.

"Can you tell me your full name, birth date?"

    "Do you have any allergies?"

"What are you having done today?"

(This list is virtually endless – I’ll spare you)- check, check and re-check.

The required banter is over. Now the patient and I have the infamous ‘downtime’ before they are met by the next set of nurses / physicians.

This is the ‘Hurry-Up-And-Wait’ stage = You need to work at light speed to get everything in order so that when the time is right (meaning when the surgeon arrives and is ready) we can get the patient moving down to the OR.

"This is the worst part" – I always tell the patients. "Once they roll you down to the OR , the next thing you’ll remember or realize is your waking up and it’s all over".

When time permits (meaning someone didn’t pull me to do something else, or another patient did not require my attention or services) I usually pass some of these ‘clock-watching’ moments with striking up a conversation. These conversations usually involve poking fun at the oh-so obvious surrendering of ‘control’ when a person undergoes surgery, but it can involve anything under the sun.

This may sound crazy, but I often forget the fact that I’m a ‘MALE’ nurse. I simply view myself as a ‘nurse’. I don’t introduce my self as, "Hi, My name is Sean. I’ll be your male nurse today." Maybe it’s ignorance.. or maybe it’s me subliminally coercing everyone around me not to ‘recognize’ me as their ‘male’ nurse. I don’t know.

All I do know is that when I get the comments from patients about being a male nurse, I always have to stop and put myself in their shoes. (Which is hard sometimes)

On this particular day my patient jests to me, "My friend in china could not believe there were male nurses?!"

    ….

    ….

(This is me trying to convey the moment of silence after this statement was made)

    "Oh…."

    "Uh…."

    "Really?.."

The patient clarifies, "Yeah, I’ve been here before. So when he heard about you male nurses he was so shocked. He couldn’t believe there were male nurses"

I replied in my most professional voice I could muster, "Yes. There are a lot of us. Far more than most realize."

"And we’re here to stay" – I proudly grinned as I was called into another room.

We all live in our own ‘bubble’ of reality – no matter how small that bubble may be.

Hi. My name is Sean. I’ll be your nurse today.

Attention Wal-Mart Shoppers… Ear Infections In Aisle 4. Sore Throat In Aisle 5.

Posted by Sean on September 5, 2009

    out-of-pocket-1

Worried about your health care? How about the impending changes to our overall health care system? Concerned about costs?

Well it seems that these retail health clinic’s dubbed ‘Minute-Clinic’s’  are the answer to reducing costs AND receiving quality-type care. Care that is on the level, or very close to the care you receive from the Doctor’s office, or hospital Emergency Department.

Study: Retail health clinics as good as doc office – Health care- msnbc.com

“study of the care provided in U.S. retail clinics, found “no difference in the quality offered to patients visiting retail clinics, physician offices and urgent care centers.” For some services, retail clinics even did slightly better than hospital emergency rooms”

These retail clinics have of course been a source of concern for some physician’s groups.

“have raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest and the quality of care at retail clinics, where immunizations and treatment for routine illnesses like middle ear infections and sore throats are generally offered by nurse practitioners rather than doctors”

So these retail clinics are providing a quality of care for common illnesses at a much lower price and in a much more efficient timely manner. Not to mention they operate in conjunction with a Pharmacy – therefore you can get your prescription refilled right there. Most of these facilities accept most insurances due to their relationship with the Pharmacy.

So what do you think? Would you go? Have you gone?

WOOT! WOOT! What The Heck Is Wibiya??

Posted by Sean on September 4, 2009

If you’ve been visiting my blog lately you may have notices a small little addition to my lil’ ole’ blog. The Wibiya toolbar at the bottom of the page.

    clip_image001

It’s being promoted as THE blogger’s toolbar. Not only as a blog writer, but can be useful for someone who reads blogs. It’s a Mecca of interactive features for your blog or any blog. Think about any and everything you do when you read a blog post – it’s got an App for that. After you’ve read a blog post you do one of several things.

You may want to share the blog or the specific blog post. Maybe even add the RSS feed to your feed reader?:

    clip_image002

You simply click on the word "+share" and you get a drop-down drop-up menu that displays all the plethora of ways through social media sites you can share the blog and the blog post.

Gee, maybe after you read that particular blog post you’d like to learn a little bit more about the blog you are reading. Maybe you want to see some of the recent blog posts?:

    clip_image003

Oh wait. What the heck is that? A message for me to read?

    clip_image004

Wibiya can be customized to give your readers a welcome message, or any type of interactive message. Want to let your readers know about your activities on your blog? Or maybe on Facebook? Well it’s completely customizable, and you can include links!

After all that, maybe you’d just like to see a certain subject in regards to that blog?:

    clip_image005

As a side note, you can search the blog’s site, or you can change the setting and do a general web search:

    clip_image006

Or, maybe you want to RT or simply share this blog and blog post through Twitter? Maybe you want to see if anyone else is talking chatting tweeting about this pretty cool blog you just discovered?:

    clip_image007

After all that. Maybe, just maybe you think this darn toolbar at the bottom of the screen is just an eyesore and getting really annoying. Well you can minimize it too:

    clip_image008

As you can see this handy-dandy lil blogging tool has some great potential for you as the blogger and you as the reader. It seems to be by invite only right now. I have been stumbling upon this lil bar lately with some other blogs I read and it took a little bit of research, but I found the darn source. After an email and a couple tweets on Twitter, I got my invite, slapped the code on my blog.. And Voila’!

Here is there website: Wibiya. Drop them a tweet on: Twitter

    I Wonder….

Posted by Sean on September 1, 2009

    question

Obesity and central abdominal fat are related to calcification in the abdominal and coronary aorta, researchers report in the August 15th issue of the American Journal of Cardiology.

I wonder who in the world pays for these studies? How do we fund such research, when common sense is free?

Sorry. Was that my outside voice?
