From A Hopeful Sleepy-Head

Posted by Sean on October 16, 2009

Well my first nightshift in over a year came and went. I survived. Somehow I did more than just scrape by? I actually tolerated the nightshift with some energy left intact!

For me, the nightshift has always been about not sleeping. Not sleeping – which lead to my zombie-like presence. I would basically not sleep for the shift I worked, then run the marathon and pass out the following night.

The last time I physically had to work the nightshift was with the job that was 70 miles away. That drive home was wickedly horrible. After a 12-hour night shift I would sit in my car for another hour and some change. Then try to figure out how to get in to bed and sleep.

Zombie.

Now I work a 12-hour shift and my drive is, at the most, 20 minutes. That’s a blink of an eye. Before I know it, I’m home.

So I worked 2 12-hour shifts so far. I made it home and I was exhausted after a night of being awake. I passed out. For someone who claims to be a light sleeper -  I slept pretty darn good. I think I got between 6 and 7 hours of sleep!

My second worked shift, I got home and immediately went to sleep and was up after about 5 hours of sleep.

I’m hopeful.

If I can get the needed sleep… I’m golden!

I think the key element here is now when I get home… I’m actually tired. Hell – I’m whipped! So I get all my stuff ready for the next shift, shower, shave, etc. Then I crash.

I’ll keep you posted on how things turn out. I work the nightshift all weekend.

Fingers crossed.

Posted by Sean on October 16, 2009

Is sticking to a diet too hard?
Exercising too hard?

It seems that Nick Scott had a very good excuse not to do any of those thing?

What’s your excuse?

Heard Around The Inter-webs!

Posted by Sean on October 15, 2009

The nursosphere is thriving and Change of Shift, the always interesting compendium of what’s new on nursing blogs, is up over at Emergiblog.

So for quite a while now I’ve been wanting a better ‘name’ or ‘reference’ to nurses on the internet. More specifically nurse bloggers. We’ve tried the medblogger tag, which encompasses all our fellow medical professionals who are out there bloggin’.
I read this one today: nursosphere.
What do you think?

Kudos to AJN.

Change of Shift | CoS

Posted by Sean on October 15, 2009

CoS

The latest installment of Change of Shift is up over at its home Emergiblog.

There are a lot of great submissions as always. This edition comes from Las Vegas at this year’s Blog World Expo!  Be sure to check out the latest edition of our beloved blog carnival.

I failed to submit this time around. Blame it on the new job, school, and yes just plain ole’ laziness.

As always a BIG THANK YOU to Kim over at Emergiblog for getting the CoS party started, and keeping the fire going!

Carpe Diem

Arm Yourself This Flu Season

Posted by Sean on October 13, 2009

To fight flu, arm your immune system with diet, rest – CNN.com.

It’s no secret. The flu – and I mean ANY flu, wreaks havoc on you body. Everyone as of late has been in a slight panic over the H1N1 virus and the ensuing ‘swine’ flu. How to prevent it? How to avoid it?

A lot of talk, discussion, chatter and disagreement has been over the vaccine itself. To get vaccinated or not? Do the benefits outweigh the risks.

Aside from those individuals with already compromised immune systems and the high risk populations, I’m here to tell you to stick to the basics. Stick to what has worked, what does work, and what will continue to work in the fight against that horrible monster called the flu: Monitor Your Health. Not only monitor it, but maximize it to its fullest potential.

In other words, take care of yourself and your body. Trust me, it’s the only one you get.

The article above from CNN highlights what we should already know, but just in case you forgot, or would like a kind reminder, here are some key tips to help keep you armed against this deadly foe.

  • Boost your immune system: get the vaccine (if you feel comfortable doing so)
  • Good nutrition: eat the right foods. Stay away from the saturated fatty foods. More vegetable. More lean protein
  • Supplements: This is just an added boost to your regular diet. Be sure to get most of your needed vitamins from the foods you eat. Adding a lil extra w0n’t hurt.
  • Exercise: I don’t care what it is. Just do it. Get out there, and get moving. The more often the better. The more intense, the better.
  • Sleep: This is the BIG one. Everyone functions on too little sleep. And while this works for a short time, your body will kindly remind you when it needs its rest. A tired body = a weakened immune system.

If after all this you still lose the battle and get the flu (any flu!), be sure to handle it properly. Don’t force yourself to make it to work. Don’t drag your butt to the gym. Your body will only recover if you allow it. Sleep, sleep and more sleep. After that, sleep some more. During the waking hours drink as much fluids as possible due to the dehydration that sets in from losing all your fluids via the Kleenex. A quick tip: those headaches and body aches are ‘mostly‘ due to dehydration. Fluids, fluids and more fluids.

The flu is a virus, plain and simple. There is no amount of medication that will hasten or shorten your suffering. You have to simply ‘ride it out’. All those wonderful over the counter medications are simply hiding (masking) the ‘symptoms’ of your flu, not eliminating the virus.

I wish you the best of luck this flu season.

Interesting Fun Fact

Posted by Sean on October 11, 2009

OK. Maybe interesting to me.

(This is the crazy stuff I read while working on my school assignments)

It seems that puberty is occurring earlier and earlier these days. The mean age of puberty can be as early as 8 years of age now.

Woah.

I remember it being 12 years of age?

What the heck happened?

I Wanna-Be A ‘Lifer’!

Posted by Sean on October 10, 2009

Experienced nurses are an example of how to avoid burn out as they have found ways to cope with and love the profession for the long haul. And yes, I believe that time makes a good nurse even better!  There of course is always an exception to the rule, but for the most part I am in awe of the nurses I am working with and am enjoying watching them in action. As always, I am realizing I have a lot to learn—much of which will take a lot of time. One day I hope to be a “lifer” who is an example of the excellence our profession has to offer.

This is an excerpt from a blog post over at Scrubs (Yes, the other avenue for which I blog). Prisca is a new nurse and she has a great insight as to what a ‘seasoned’ or ‘lifer’ nurse has and what traits we nurses should all strive to possess.

Here are just a couple of those traits:

  • Lifers are calmer in emergencies. Whereas I tend to still freeze up a bit during true emergencies, the experienced nurse moves with a fluidity and assuridity that is remarkable. They don’t seem to question their actions and I can see how refined their critical thinking has become.
  • Communication is more effective. These nurses say what they mean, concisely, clearly and accurately. When they are questioned—by docs, other nurses or patients, they answer without hesitation and seem so sure of themselves.

Please head on over(follow the link below) and read the rest. It’s worth your time. Way to go Prisca!
