A Smoking Vaccine?

NicVAX is designed to stimulate the immune system to generate antibodies that latch on to nicotine in a smoker’s body and actually prevent nicotine from ever entering the brain. The testing began last week

Trial drug may help smokers kick butts – CNN.com

Hmm.. A vaccine being developed to help stop smoking? Sound a little sci-fi’ish if you ask me, but I also think it might be the next best thing.

It’s no secret how I feel about smoking. Just take a look here, here, here, here, here, here and here. (By the way.. I had no idea I had blogged so much about this subject)

I think this new vaccine brings possibility to those smokers who have wanted to quit, have tried everything, but still fall victim to this slave-like addiction. Maybe, just maybe this could help them.. and in effect help us by eliminating the smoke world-wide.

I’ll be interested to see how this develops.

Up and Down..

Tired_by_billysphoto  Image Source:deviantART

For the count that is. Have I mentioned how much the night shift and I do not get along? (You’re probably getting sick and ‘tired’ of hearing it from me)

Here’s my problem. I’m a light sleeper. So light of a sleeper that the wind outside wakes me- not a lie. So ‘forcing’ myself or convincing myself to sleep is just impossible.

I’m all out of sorts.

My body is rejecting my F’d up circadian clock right now. It doesn’t know if it’s coming or going. Day or night? Stay awake.. or sleep?

When I want or need to sleep.. I’m wide fricken awake!. When I want or need to stay awake.. I’m peeling my eyelids open just to focus! I have to convince my synapses they need to fire.

My mind’s not right. My brain is hazy. And my attitude has gone down the toilet. My poor wife has suffered the most. She gets to listen to me whine.. and she gets the whipping end of my short-fuse. I seem to be snapping and ‘biting’ at all the small things – and I KNOW I’m doing it. She’s so good to me, tolerating me and my down-right miserable-ness. These are one of the million times I am truly lucky to be her husband. She makes me a better man by simply being her – because no one else would tolerate me and my bitterness. I love you angel.

Grr.

I hate this.

I hate the ‘me’ I see.

People Of Walmart? Really??

Posted by Sean on November 7, 2009

This new viral site has been all the buzz within the social media circles and within my own personal social circle (away from the monitors and keyboards). I think it’s popularity stems from the common ‘What The F*’ thought process every time you see the public and their blatant disregard for proper public etiquette.

You have to give the guys who created the site credit for stealing a great idea. An idea that we all wish WE would have thought of!

Before it went insanely viral.. it was comical and down right entertaining. Now… I’m not as easily entertained. I’m now more ‘put-off’. I’m beside myself viewing some of these pictures. I can’t stop thinking, “REALLY? Someone actually left their house looking like that?”

I have a hard time grasping this concept, or wrapping my mind around this absurdity. Either these ‘people of walmart’ do not own a mirror, or they’re doing it on purpose.

I’m starting to lean towards the latter. I mean C’mon. Take for instance this one:

Wintery Mix | www.peopleofwalmart.com.

Really? Am I to believe this person actually looked at their outfit.. and thought… yep. I’m good to go. Let’s go shopping.

Here’s my theory:

I think the public is catching on to this site.. (or maybe the creators of the site are just as guilty) .. and these ‘people’ are purposely finding a ‘costume’ so-to-speak.. so that they can get on the internet? Or they are donning this costume.. and getting pics on this site just to generate traffic.

Is it a far-fetched idea?

Just my humble opinion.

A 'New' Epitome Of Laziness…

Posted by Sean on November 7, 2009

I’ve talked about this many time before. Obesity – how it’s NOT a disease. I’ve talked about how those who are obese use their obesity as a ‘crutch’. Being obese is there excuse for all the negatives in their life.

Well I just read something that made my jaw hit the floor. A new low. It seems that someone actually tried to avoid legal conviction by claiming they were ‘too fat to kill’??? A man in NJ was on trial for murder.. and his defense was that he was ‘too fat’ to have committed the murder and ‘make a quick getaway’.

C’mon.

Really?

Posted by Sean on November 5, 2009

I cannot believe it has been 20 years since “Say Anything”. I don’t know about you.. but I could quote the movie script ver batim! All good stuff.
That was when John Cusack and his sister were in the same movie AS brother and sister!
Ione Skye was hot and a weird sort of way?
And who could forget the song – “Joe Lies”??
The graduation party..
OH and of course his gaggle of friends that were hilarious- which included his real-life friend Jeremy Piven.

RNchat? Nurses Engaged and Embedded In The Social Web

Posted by Sean on November 4, 2009

Over the past year or so I’ve become more involved with the ‘social’ aspects of the internet. Everything from blogging, microblogging and social media. A year ago I started this lil’ blog here as well as joined the ranks of Twitter, and this past spring I dived into Facebook.

All of the above mentioned ventures have proven fruitful and enlightening. I have met and continue to interact and ‘chat’ with such a diverse group of individuals! I have come to realize at an alarming rate just how many nurses are out there on the internets!! Not only are they out there.. but they are just like me! They have a thirst for the ‘social’ aspect of the web, they have a passion for this wonderful profession of nursing, and they’re just down right nice people to get to know.

This past year has exploded with nurses and fellow health care professionals out there! It’s mind boggling. I meet or chat with a new medical/health care professional every week – at the very least (it’s usually much, much more).

The collaboration, sharing, and networking is just astonishing. I sometimes have a hard time wrapping my mind around just how big this thing has gotten.. and just how much bigger it will become. The numbers are climbing, and the interest keeps growing. Before you know it nurses and the word social media will become as synonymous as the word blog and internet. (yep.. I’m aiming high).

Recently efforts are being made to corral the conversation. Phil Baumann has created and conducts an awesome ‘virtual’ chat on Twitter called RN Chat. It’s a free-form forum-type thinking-and-action discussion. It of course is geared for RN’s, but other healthcare and medical professionals are welcome to participate. The chat’s are pre-scheduled at designated times. Each chat session is given a couple days to a week notice for everyone to try and attend. The ‘chat’ is began, guided and monitored by Phil himself, who also participates in the dialog.

Phil has taken the time to create a dedicated website that gives all the great details about this awesome community-driven service at RNchat. It also gives a detailed transcript of each previous chat session! (How cool is that?) So if you miss the chat, and wanted to know what was discussed.. you can take a gander. Tucked snuggly within this website is also a great list of RN’s on Twitter! Phil thought of everything.

So without further ado here is the man himself:

Serendipity, Community & Nursing

Way to go Phil!

Be sure to say hi to Phil or myself the next time you are on Twitter. Not on Twitter? Why not? Come say hi to the nurses on Twitter!
