Avatar – Modern Day ‘Fern Gully’??

I of course keep talking about Avatar, we saw it in 3D yesterday. It was awesome, the visual effects are just mind boggling. The storyline just struck me as familiar. Boy sent to destroy forest. Find’s out forest has ‘people’. Forest people are ‘special’. Forest people have special ‘bond’ and relationship to forest. Boy meets forest people girl. Boy and girl fall for each other. Boy helps girl, changes sides, fights to keep forest alive.

Hmm..

It’s a far stretch.. but for anyone who was around for this flick back in the early 90’s – this synopsis has A LOT of similarities to the cartoon-made-movie ‘Fern Gully’?

Yeah, yeah.. I know one is an animated cartoon.. and one is the kick-ass CGI generated human-like phenomena, but think about it. In the end.. it’s all about saving the forest people, and preserving the ‘forest’.

Hmm..

This is just how my mind works. Sorry. Raised Eyebrow

Fern Gully was a fairytale for children, Avatar is an action movie rendered digitally. It was a huge hit at the box office, it ran on all 12 Phoenix theaters at the same time, and people couldn't get enough of it. I enjoyed it, not one of my favourites though.

Oh yes. Robin Williams made that movie!

  3. Fern Gully had some hysterical stuff from Robin Williams as the fruit bat. Timothy Curry (“Dr Frankenfurter” in Rocky Horror) was great as the villian.

Oh – absolutely! I loved the movie as well – it broke new ground in movie making.

I loved the movie, not going to lie. I noticed the plot similarity too, but there are no original stories only original concepts. The way they made this movie was definitely a new concept, and they had me at 'hello'.

You and me both! I already told my wife I'd be seeing it a second time!
