TV’s BIG Dose Of Obesity’s Reality

Unlike the competitive nature of NBC’s "The Biggest Loser," where producers engage personal trainers and nutritionists to assist contestants in their weight loss, the Cole family appear to be going it alone on the show.

‘Big’ concerns surround new reality show – CNN.com

When I first read this, I thought, “This. Is. Awesome. Finally a ‘real’ dose of losing weight.” I envisioned an obese and overweight family tackling their health problems together in a productive manner, while portraying the tough ‘reality’ of losing weight. Unlike ‘The Biggest Loser’, where you have a dietician, personal trainers, and a finite time to compete and lose weight.

Then I read this article, and watched the above video.

Raised Eyebrow

What… The……

Are they serious? I mean is the cable channel TLC serious? Is the Cole family serious?

I’m all for losing weight. I’m all for having the support of your family. And I’m all for giving a dose of ‘reality’ by showing the viewers how difficult it is to lose weight with the day-to-day healthy decisions that have to be made, and the struggle one has with their individual food choices…etc, etc..

But wholly cow.

In the clip, the Coles — who said they were discovered by producers via Norris Cole’s Web site — are shown eating a voracious amount of pancakes, which mother Tameka says the family can work off later that day during a walk around a local water park. Once there, they indulge in a big, sugary piece of funnel cake.

C’mon people. Seriously?

Anything for the ratings I guess.

Sad.

It’s sad, really.

Is this family actually serious about losing weight? So far it doesn’t look like it.

Steve, I took a look at the article. Good stuff. Thanks!

Steve, delusional is a very, very good description of this whole show.

  4. Sean, this family needs a serious dose of the book “The Purposeful Primitive” http://martygallagher.com/; which was written by a Keystone-State Person named Marty Gallagher. He has a lot of valid criticisms of the the “Biggest Loser”(having really obese people trying to run, for example), but these guys are delusional if they think that a mild stroll is going to overcome eating like that.

from what I gathered – they are doing it without any assistance. And with the video in mind, they don't seem to have a clue how to address their health issues.*sigh*

So, ummm, exactly what are they going to do to work on getting healthy and losing weight? Is this the “before” promo? Will there be anyone to help guide them to healthier eating and exercise?
