The Media CONTINUES To Give Nurses A Bad Name And Bad Image

Come on! Seriously Mariah??

I’m having a hard time not losing my cool over this recent (attempt) music video by Mariah Carey. Yeah, yeah I know it’s a music video. Yeah, I know it’s all in fun and for entertainment. BUT, when is society and the media going to put a stop to the ‘sexy nurse’?

Gee. Maybe I should put one of those outfits on? What do you think? White skirt with my high heels, pretty lil white cap and of course the over-the-top red lipstick?

I’m a nurse.. so it should elicit the same response right? It’s sexy right?

Listen up people!

This persona and fantasy only makes my job tougher. It degrades and denounces the very fabric of our job and our careers. I  am in the business of saving and impacting lives. When I have a bad day – someone gets hurt. We don’t wear those outfits. We don’t saunter to our patients’ room. We SURE don’t wear high heels!

It really angers me to the point of exhaustion when we keep allowing the media to bash and abuse this old, and frankly disgusting portrayal of nurses.

Yeah, I’m fully aware of the difference between fantasy and reality. I have a firm grasp on fact versus fiction.

But, I’m not the rest of society.

Grr.Angry

Strong words – but you are absolutely correct. Her negative influence and portrayal of nurses is saddening and frustrating.

What a ho Mariah Carey continues to be!!! I too do not appreciate the implication she portrays by dressing in a nurse's hat and white dress. I consider it a slap in the face to all hard-working, intelligent nurses when I see some bimbo like her degrading our profession without a thought to how she, unfortunately, influences young impressionable minds.

I sure as hell would like some men trying to wear such a nurse costume which they find soooo hot. That´s an image i really would like to see.Maybe it would also cure some of the 'patients' if the nurse would just act as the stupid image implies.Totally clueless, clumsy..standing doe eyed in the room, eyeing the i.v. “Ok what should i do? Oh no i can not see blood and god beware..needles”*gets dizzy-screams*The smexy image of the dumb-boob buster as nurse still so appealing when you are scared shitless that she/he may kill you?

Steve, I know allll about the heartattack grill. Grr. Grr. Grr.

  6. Hi Sean, For this very reason, I refuse to watch re-runs of MASH, and I hate most of the way nurses are potrayed in the media. There is actually a fast food place in the Phoenix area where the servers are dressed as naughty nurses. http://www.heartattackgrill.com/ As a guy who works with some great and professional nurses at the VA Medical center in Minnapolis on the Spinal Cord Injury unit, I go ballistic with these nurse as sex kitten potrayals.

If it would be effective.. I'd be all for it. Unfortunately 'sex' sells. Very disheartening for our profession.

  8. Do you see Mariah misrepresenting any other profession in this video? I say nurses boycott now!

Excellent post. Thanks. I agree. No wonder some patients think we're there to “service” them.
