Know where you're going in life… you may already be there

Posted by Sean on January 15, 2010

A boat docked in a tiny Mexican village. An American tourist complimented
the Mexican fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took
him to catch them. “Not very long,” answered the Mexican. “But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the
American. The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs
and those of his family.

The American asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?” “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with
my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, have a
few drinks, play the guitar, and sing a few songs. I have a full life.” The American interrupted, “I have an MBA from Harvard and I can help you!
You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra
fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?” asked the Mexican. “With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one
and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers.
Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate
directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You
can then leave this little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or
even New York City! From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.” “How long would that take?” asked the Mexican. “Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,” replied the American. “And after that?” “Afterwards? Well my friend, that’s when it gets really interesting,”
answered the American, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you
can start buying and selling stocks and make millions!” “Millions? Really? And after that?” asked the Mexican. “After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast,
sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with
your wife and spend your evenings drinking and enjoying your friends.” And the moral of this story is: ……… Know where you’re going in life… you may already be there.

Does A Test Score Define You?

Posted by Sean on January 15, 2010

sleeping_in_classI have asked myself this question throughout my many years as a student (MANY YEARS). Does your test score fairly reflect your performance as a professional?

The following article sparked my interest – Do Test Scores Make the Doctor? – Well Blog – NYTimes.com

Whether it’s being a Physician, Nurse, Respiratory Therapist, Occupational Therapist, etc. Does your exam score quantify you and your skills in your chosen profession? Does a poor test score equate to poor skills or worse yet a failure? And the opposite, does high performance test scores reflect superb skills and being a success at your job??

I for one think it’s hog-wash. It’s a balance. We as professionals need all of the above to do our job well, and do deliver the best care possible. I agree, knowledge is the key, but if you cannot apply the knowledge, or use the knowledge in everyday functioning what’s the point?

I think it’s the age-old debate between ‘book’ smarts and ‘common’ sense (sometimes called street smarts).

You need to be equal parts ‘nerd’ and versatile ‘Joe’. In the ‘thick’ of it, you need to draw on your education and knowledge as well as perform and utilize critical thinking skills ‘in the moment’ to properly and effectively do your job.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this one!

Nobody Is Ever Happy Enough Just to Enjoy

Vatican says ‘Avatar’ is no masterpiece (AP) – Yahoo! Movies

What is it with people these days? Can’t we just enjoy a movie for the shear experience? Nothing more. Nothing less. Does there ALWAYS have to be a hidden message? Does someone always have to ‘create’ or ‘dig’ for a hazed and distorted theme?

How about we just watch the movie and enjoy it for what it is – entertainment.

No.

Instead we have to tatter the headlines with religious disapproval and apparently an underlying racist plot??

C’mon people.

Isn’t there more important things going on in the world?

TV’s BIG Dose Of Obesity’s Reality

Posted by Sean on January 12, 2010

image

Unlike the competitive nature of NBC’s "The Biggest Loser," where producers engage personal trainers and nutritionists to assist contestants in their weight loss, the Cole family appear to be going it alone on the show.

‘Big’ concerns surround new reality show – CNN.com

When I first read this, I thought, “This. Is. Awesome. Finally a ‘real’ dose of losing weight.” I envisioned an obese and overweight family tackling their health problems together in a productive manner, while portraying the tough ‘reality’ of losing weight. Unlike ‘The Biggest Loser’, where you have a dietician, personal trainers, and a finite time to compete and lose weight.

Then I read this article, and watched the above video.

Raised Eyebrow

What… The……

Are they serious? I mean is the cable channel TLC serious? Is the Cole family serious?

I’m all for losing weight. I’m all for having the support of your family. And I’m all for giving a dose of ‘reality’ by showing the viewers how difficult it is to lose weight with the day-to-day healthy decisions that have to be made, and the struggle one has with their individual food choices…etc, etc..

But wholly cow.

In the clip, the Coles — who said they were discovered by producers via Norris Cole’s Web site — are shown eating a voracious amount of pancakes, which mother Tameka says the family can work off later that day during a walk around a local water park. Once there, they indulge in a big, sugary piece of funnel cake.

C’mon people. Seriously?

Anything for the ratings I guess.

Sad.

It’s sad, really.

Is this family actually serious about losing weight? So far it doesn’t look like it.

Too Much Television? Bad For Your Health?

Posted by Sean on January 12, 2010

The researchers suggest this link between TV-time and early death could be partly due to the fact that sitting in front of the tube may take away from time a person might otherwise spend moving about, engaging in light activity, which has been shown to reduce the risk of developing certain biological indicators of cardiovascular disease.

Couch potatoes may have shorter lives – Diet and nutrition- msnbc.com

Seems that the rumors are true directly and indirectly. Are you surprised? Really? I’m pretty sure the information and the effects of a sedentary lifestyle on your health are not new, nor are they shocking.

Oh – and it applies to the chair sitting in front of your computer as well.

Get up.

Get moving.

Get healthy.

Any questions?
