I Never Believed This Was Possible – But Now I Do

Posted by Sean on July 7, 2010

I guess seeing is believing…

As a nurse I can remember the first time I watched the recovery process of a very sick individual from start to finish. As a nursing student and new nurse you read about how the body recovers and the processes that take place on a microbiological level. You have an appreciation for how the 'human body' heals.

But watching it at the bedside gives a whole new meaning to surreal. The amazing resilience the human body and human spirit have still amazes me everyday.

Just when you thought the disease or the accident has won the battle, the human being and their spirit somehow fights their way back to normalcy. So many times have I taken care of a patient who is 'knocking on heaven's door' – only to make an eye-opening recovery.

You see those patients after the recovery and you are still amazed at what you see before your eyes.

I guess maybe I've never viewed it as such, but miracles do happen.

Weekend ICU Admission May Up the Risk of Dying?

Posted by Sean on July 7, 2010

This is actually quite disturbing to think that any of this evidence is true.

“A change in the organizational/staffing structure of an ICU and hospital over the weekend likely explains the increased mortality noted,” the researchers wrote in the July issue of Chest.

Hmm…

Keeping A Wrap On Things When Transporting A Patient

Posted by Sean on July 6, 2010

You have an ill patient who has to go to OR or Radiology in a hurry.  They have pumps, monitors, and cords plugged in all over the place.

It takes you 5 minutes or more and a hurt back to unplug and arrange the cords.  Then half-way there, the cords fall off the bed, and you have to start all over before you reach your destination.

Does any of this sound familiar? As a Critical Care nurse, transporting patients becomes part of our job (sometimes more than we’d like to report). Transporting them for an array and battery of tests. Everything from CT, MRI, X-ray series, OR, etc. We run the gamut. Transporting our patients is no small task. Take into consideration the multitude of machinery we have to roll along with the patient.

At any given time we could be lugging along 1, 2 or 3 IV poles (which contain numerous critical medicine drips), a cardiac monitor (with or without defibrillator capacity), oxygen (is the patient intubated), if intubated we have an RT with us, 1, 2 or 3 suction canisters for the NG, OG, drains or chest tubes, chest tube pleuro-vac, central and arterial monitoring devices, how about an EVD pole and/or drain, maybe a bolt in their cranium, etc. This list is endless.

As you can see all those devices require electric power, ergo a power cord. Guess where all those darn power cords have to go? Yes, to and from your destination, as well as during your procedure? Yep, with you.

Where do you put them?

Tuck them here, or there. Hide them in between the bed mattress and frame, or loop them all around one of the many IV poles? Your guess is a good as mine.

Well it seems Dr. Dean Burke may know someone who has a better answer?

Before: cord

After:

cord1What do ya think?

Well it seems that this fellow warrior (yes, she’s a nurse) has the answer to our woes and needs a lil’ help getting funding while she waits for her patent.

Dr. Dean Burke posted a blog post about her plight, as well as listed a short survey involving her ideas. Take the survey and you could placed in a drawing for a $75 gift card.

Not too bad if you ask me.

Ya think you can lend her a hand? Pass on the word.

Hot Humid Weather Alert?

Posted by Sean on July 6, 2010

I didn’t know there was such a thing that could exist up in my area of the world? I mean Western PA? A hot humid weather alert?
Of course yesterday was a ‘scorcher’ for us and today is supposed to be a repeat, so in that respect I can understand.
It’s rather funny that during vacation (which was just shy of a month ago) the heat index was between 110 -115 degrees.
Yet, the weather of 90 degrees is almost unbearable here now?
Things that make you go hmm…

Amplify’d from www.weather.com

STAY COOL AND LISTEN FOR FURTHER UPDATES ON THIS WEEKS HEAT AND HUMIDITY FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE CAN ISSUE A HEAT ADVISORY WHEN THE HEAT INDEX PEAKS BETWEEN 100 AND 104. HOWEVER CRITERIA MAY BE ADJUSTED WHEN HEAT AND HIGH HUMIDITY HANG ON FOR SEVERAL CONSECUTIVE DAYS.

NEVER LEAVE ANYONE… PARTICULARLY A CHILD OR PET IN A VEHICLE WITH ITS WINDOWS CLOSED OR PARKED IN THE SUN. BEWARE OF OBJECTS IN THE SUN BECOMING HOT ENOUGH TO BURN… SUCH AS METAL PAVEMENTS OR SAND.

WHEN HEAT INDEX VALUES REACH INTO THE 90S… ITS WISE TO SLOW DOWN AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. WEAR LOOSE FITTING AND LIGHT COLORED CLOTHES. STAY OUT OF THE SUN… AS THE SUN CAN MAKE YOU FEEL EVEN 15 DEGREES HOTTER. SUNBURN CAN ALSO WORSEN THE EFFECT OF HIGH HEAT. INSTEAD SPEND MORE TIME IN AIR CONDITIONED PLACES. CHECK ON ELDERLY AND OTHERS WHO MAY BE IMPAIRED BY THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY.

HIGH TEMPERATURES WILL BE 90 TO 95 EACH AFTERNOON. BECAUSE OF THE HIGH HUMIDITY… HEAT INDEX VALUES WILL PEAK IN THE MID 90S THIS AFTERNOON AND POSSIBLY UPPER 90S WEDNESDAY OR THURSDAY. THE HEAT INDEX… ALSO KNOWN AS THE APPARENT TEMPERATURE… CONSIDERS THE EFFECTS OF BOTH HEAT AND HUMIDITY ON THE HUMAN BODY.

WEATHER

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE ADVISES TAKING EXTRA PRECAUTION FOR HOT AND HUMID CONDITIONS THAT WILL REMAIN ACROSS THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY.

… HOT HUMID WEATHER TO CONTINUE TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY…

My Life, Ten Years From Now

Posted by Sean on July 6, 2010

My hope is that my life in 10 years will be a carbon copy of my life for the most part. I will have graduated from Nurse Practitioner school and of course would be working in my chosen field.

I'll still be married to my beautiful wife, maybe we'll hear the pitter-patter of lil' feet in our home. Our home of course will hopefully be different. Either we will have made some upgrades, or we will have moved into a new location with the amenities we continue to talk about.

My family and friends will be just as awesome as they are now. Sharing the good times and the bad. I hope the health of my loved ones continues to be on the up-and-up!

I only hope for my life to maintain it's path and grow as we grow.

Top it with whipped cream

Posted by Sean on July 5, 2010

My allegiance was to Cool Whip for the majority of my life, up until my beautiful wife joined the picture. I was a brand name Cool Whip kind of guy, it's what we grew up on as kids (same goes for the brand name Sloppy Joe mix).

My wife insisted I try the 'real stuff'. Being skeptical, I still tried it and I must tell you the 'real stuff' makes all the difference.

Nurses Under the Influence of Pharma—Not Just an NP Problem « Off the Charts

Posted by Sean on July 4, 2010

This unfortunately rings true for all nurses. We need to be mindful of our actions and influences – all of which can influence our care of our patients.

Muscling’ It Up?

Posted by Sean on July 4, 2010

So, I’ve heard of and seen this performed using the ‘rings’, but not with a bar. Either way this exercise is one powerful movement. I’m interested in trying it – I stress the word TRY.

I’m not even sure I can perform one rep!

Anyone else?
