What I'm Avoiding

Posted by Sean on August 18, 2010

Growing up!

The World’s Biggest Toys’R'Us

(I'm a toys 'r' us kid…)

Heh heh. I will always be the 'big kid', wanting to find the 'fun' in everything I do. My day isn't complete unless I make someone else smile, or I smile throughout my day. Whether at work, or on my day off, smiling and having fun is a prerequisite to my day.

Life is too short to be wasted on negative energy.

The Funniest Movie Ever

Posted by Sean on August 16, 2010

Non-stop laughter at its best

It was everything. The plot line, the actors, and the physical comedy all rolled into one. I haven't seen a movie with this kind of laughter in quite some time. The combination of Will Smith and Kevin James just rattled your funny bone from start to finish.

I often go back and watch this movie for a good laugh, when needed.

How We Torture Our Patients For The Greater Good

Posted by Sean on August 15, 2010

Oh the irony.
I just spoke to my wife about this very thing. Inserting a nasogastric (NG) tube has got to be THE worst thing for our patients.
They are awake and alert (in most cases). They have to fight back the urge to gag, cough, and of course vomit.
The cilia hairs within our nasal passages causes the utmost discomfort in the form of pain, burning, itching and eventually the watery eyed reflex.
The presence of a tube in the back of your throat yields no amount of give or comfort. There is a constant reminder of its presence every time you blink, breathe, swallow, cough, etc. You are reminded of the discomfort every time you move your head, nose, mouth, lips, etc.
There is all kinds of ‘nasty’ to this intervention, yet it remains a staple of care for a plethora of medical illnesses and challenges.
Whew…
Take a look at the wonderful video Ian posted on Impactednurse.com.

Any questions?

how (not) to insert a naso-gastric tube.

There is no doubt that inserting a naso-gastric tube is one of the more uncomfortable things we do to our patients.

And for some strange reason, all over the world, student nurses, paramedics, and med students are keen to find out first hand just what all that gagging is about…..

One Surprised Blogger

Posted by Sean on August 15, 2010

Birthday-2

Wholly cow.

I just renewed mystrongmedicine.com. It’s been two years since I created the blog name. I dabble for years at blogging, but finally dug my feet in the sand two years ago.

Whew…

I can remember toying all summer with blogging, not knowing what to blog about, names, themes, etc.

I think I was going in a million different directions.

That was back when there were barely any nurses on Twitter. Back when there were only a select nurse blogs that I followed.

Fast forward two years – boy have things changed! Talk about growing.

I can’t wait to see where the next two years go.

What's More Important

Posted by Sean on August 14, 2010

A healthy balance

Balance of nature

What I do for a living is of course a priority in my life. I would not give up or change my occupation simply because we move.

In the same breath, I enjoy my location because of family and friends being nearby.

So I don't believe one is more 'important' than the other. I believe they are dependent upon each other. A healthy balance of both is needed.

The One Who Got Away

Posted by Sean on August 12, 2010

No one.

I've been lucky enough to hold onto the one who 'almost' got away. Well honestly it wasn't that she got away, more like I pushed her away.

My beautiful wife and I 'danced' quite a bit before we figured it out. We were meant to be together and were better together than apart.

I am where I am today because she's in my life and is my wife.

Ahh… I'm glad she didn't get away.

Dreaming Of Success

Posted by Sean on August 11, 2010

Dreaming it sets things in motion, but dreaming it doesn’t achieve it. You have to work at it to make your dreams come true.
Some will have to work harder and longer, but it can be done.
Working on your dreams is nothing easy, but then again it wouldn’t be called a dream would it?

Frenzied Over Fast Food

Posted by Sean on August 10, 2010

This is the state of our world today. We throw a ‘temper tantrum’ because we didn’t get our fast-food choice?
OK – so maybe I didn’t get all the gory details, but knowing that woman assaulted more than one fast-food restaurant worker because she didn’t get her chicken mcnuggets seems to be a bit over the top.

Video shows woman smashing window over McNuggets

TOLEDO, Ohio – A security video from a McDonald’s in Ohio shows a woman punching two restaurant employees and smashing a drive-thru window because she couldn’t get Chicken McNuggets. The tantrum caught on tape in Toledo earlier this year shows the customer reaching through the drive-thru window, slugging one worker and then another. She then grabs a bottle out of her car and tosses it through the glass window before speeding off.

It happened early on New Year’s Day. Police say Melodi Dushane was angry that McNuggets weren’t being served, because it was breakfast time.

Dushane says she was drunk at the time. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail last month and ordered to pay McDonald’s for the broken window.

The video was released Monday when it became public record.

I'm a Nurse – Oh, And I Play One In Real Life

Posted by Sean on August 8, 2010

I still am amazed by the ‘side-show’ antics network television provides. Nurses on TV still mislead, misdirect and deceive the public in to thinking that what they see on TV is what you’ll find in real life.

And the fight continues.

Grey’s Anatomy: Have fun playing nurse!

illustrate the two main stereotypes that the hit show continues to reinforce:  that nurses are physician handmaidens, and that they are low-skilled workers worthy only of contempt.
a male resident mocks Lexie by telling her that it sounds like she will be Shepherd’s “bitch” and urging her to “have fun playing nurse.”
as a resident fighting off a male colleague’s claim that she is just a “nurse” who has no business defibrillating
Again, there is no defense of nursing
as Shepherd suggests that another surgeon is wasting her time doing after-care since a “nurse practitioner can do this.” Read more at www.truthaboutnursing.org
