Disease In The Gym
Posted by Sean on August 6, 2010
These suggestions are basic and straight forward, unfortunately the general public doesn’t adhere to them.
If you only knew what you hands were touching.
Be careful and be safe out there.
Wash your hands..
Wash your hands..
Wash your hands!
Warning: Your fellow gym-goers could be spreading disease
If you work out in a gym with other people, you might be at greater risk for skin infections than you bargained for. A recent report from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA),* notes that in athletic settings it is important to “assume that individuals are carriers of pathogenic microorganisms.” The document details how you might catch bacterial, fungal, and viral diseases, including, athlete’s foot, jock itch, staph infections including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA, an antibacterial-resistant staph infection), impetigo, herpes simplex, and ringworm during athletic activities, and provides recommendations to help trainers and athletes avoid these common ailments.
The New York Times picked up on the study earlier this week, noting that the recommendations could apply to “to anyone who works out in a communal setting, be it a school, commercial gym or Y.” They also provided personal stories, like that of Kyle Frey, a 21-year-old wrestler at Drexel University in Philadelphia. What he thought was a pimple he discovered last winter was actually a community-acquired MRSA infection. It grew overnight to the size of his bicep, according to the Times, and he spent five days in the hospital being treated for the antibiotic-resistant staph infection.
Skin infections are the most common disease outbreak in competitive sports, according to the NATA report. That may be due in part to skin-to-skin contact between athletes, or because conditions are ripe for transmission. Athletes’ skin is often sweaty, and is frequently compromised from abrasive contact—cuts and scrapes, or from shaving or taping—which can make transmission easier.
Even if you don’t play contact sports, those germs can be spread indirectly from surfaces and through the air in your workout complex. Wiping off your equipment with disinfectant isn’t just polite—it can prevent disease. You should also make sure your facility properly cleans the equipment frequently. And personal hygiene is of the utmost importance when you’re working out.”You should be showering at the gym and putting on clean clothes that are kept separate from the dirty ones,” Steven M. Zinder, a trainer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and chief author of the guidelines, told the Times. He also said that both sexes get it wrong: Men often fail to wash their whole bodies and women often wait to shower elsewhere. Here are some tips, based on the NATA guidelines, to avoid common athletic skin infections:
- Wash your hands. It’s the most important practice in preventing infection.
- Shower your entire body after a workout. Shower sandals are no excuse not to wash your feet.
- Don’t shave areas other than the face and legs—it can increase the risk of acquiring a MRSA infection.
- Clean your mats and exercise equipment before and after use.
- Don’t share personal items, such as bar soap, towels, water bottles, and protective equipment.
- Launder your workout clothes and towels every day after your workout. Disinfect protective equipment.
- Dry feet and groin areas completely.
- If necessary use a 20 percent aluminum chloride foot powder to prevent fungal growth.
- If you get an infection, stay away from public facilities until a doctor clears you to return.

Don't Believe The Hype of 'Toning' Shoes
Posted by Sean on August 5, 2010
More evidence, or findings, that support the notion. It’s not the shoes that make the man (or woman) – it’s the exercise.
Shoes alone will not ‘tone’ your body (any body part).
And it seems that these type of shoes bring the possibility of injury to the table.
Be careful out there.
Until then, if you’re a walker, you’ll get more mileage from our report on the best walking shoes.
It concluded that “there is simply no evidence to support the claims that these shoes will help wearers exercise more intensely, burn more calories, or improve muscle strength and tone.” And they raised the concern that “extended use of these toning shoes may alter the walking gait mechanics of wearers.” More testing is clearly needed to check their safety.
Skechers Shape-Ups: A wobbly experience
Although the designs vary, toners typically have strongly curved, thickened soles. From the moment Pat laced them up, she began to feel off-balance and was afraid she’d take a tumble. Going down stairs was terrifying, even when gripping the banister, and she tried going to the store once and didn’t dare leave the house again in them. “I was reeling back and forth so badly, I was sure I’d take a fall,” she said.

The Movie That Moved Me
Posted by Sean on August 2, 2010
Never quitting
It was a movie loosely based on a real character and his real-life struggles. He was never meant to succeed at anything beyond the family occupation.
He was belittled by his family, never gained support from his community and went out on his own to pursue his own dream.
He failed numerous times – came close to quitting each time but never gave up.
His will to succeed and his passion trumped everything around him.
In the end he learned that his will to never quit and 'can do' attitude was so infectious and so respected that he gained the awe and support of everyone around him while achieving his personal goals.
He never quit.

Sick Of Being Fat
Posted by Sean on August 1, 2010
So – yet another weight loss success story. We’ve seen him. We’ve seen the ballooning effect. Now he lost the weight because he got tired of seeing it on camera.
Good for him.
Inspirational. I hope for his sake he keeps it off and maintains his health lifestyle.
He also states his motivation was to be around and enjoy his family. He went from battling Diabetes to being freed from the debilitating complication.
Way to go Drew! Way to go.
Drew Carey weight loss: ‘The Price is Right’ host lost 80 lbs. after getting ‘sick of being fat’
Drew Carey lost 80 lbs. through a stict no-carb diet and a cardio-packed workout routine.
Drew Carey, the formerly hefty host of “The Price is Right,” has shed a reported 80 pounds since January. “I like being skinny. I was sick of being fat on the camera,” he told People.com. “I just got sick of it.”
Although the game show host, 52, used to have Type II Diabetes, he told the mag, “I’m not diabetic anymore. No medication needed.”
The actor said he has been committed to losing weight the old-fashioned way — strict dieting and a rigorous workout routine.
“No carbs,” Carey said. “I have cheated a couple times, but basically no carbs, not even a cracker. No bread at all. No pizza, nothing. No corn, no beans, no starches of any kind. Egg whites in the morning or like, Greek yogurt, cut some fruit.
“I don’t drink anything but water,” he added. “No coffee, no tea, no soda.”
Carey also has been keeping busy in the gym.
“Lots of cardio. About 45 minutes of cardio, at least 45 minutes of cardio,” he said. “I’ve been kind of lazy like lately, so I’m not doing it six days a week, but I will be for this next month.”
Although Carey has already gone from a size 44 pants to a size 33-34, he hopes to drop an additional 10 pounds and fit into a size 32.
“Once I started losing weight, again, like once I started dropping a couple pant sizes, then it was easy ’cause once you see the results, then you don’t wanna stop,” he said.
Carey told UsMagazine.com he wants to lose the weight so he can “be looking that great at 86″ like his “Price is Right” predecessor, Bob Barker, and to watch his fiancée’s son grow up.
“My fiancée has a 5-year-old, and wow, I’d love to see him graduate,” he added. “I’d love to be able play with him without getting tired, enjoy my life and watch him grow.”Read more at www.nydailynews.com
