Seasoned nurse versus new nurse

Posted by Sean on April 9, 2011

Here’s my latest post from over at Scrubs Magazine. Since my postings on my personal blog (here) have been sparse, I decided to spread the love from where my posts are more consistent. Be sure to visit the site.

Is there a generation gap in nursing? We jokingly refer to it as the ‘seasoned’ nurse versus the ‘young’ nurse, but I think it unfortunately is becoming quite the barrier in our profession.

Ever heard these statements before:

Those new tech-savvy young nurses don’t understand or appreciate what it ‘used to be like’. They don’t understand what hard work is. They haven’t grasped how good they got it. They’re always in a darn hurry.

And those old never-gonna-change nurses can’t accept that the way they used to do things is not always the best way. They are stubborn and can’t stop living in the past. They need to pick up the pace.

OK. I may have embellished just a tad. I apologize for my satirical attitude, it sometimes gets me into trouble. No harm intended -honestly. I only pose these questions to you because whether we like it or not this barrier exists and it’s getting in the way of progress. We’re all nurses here, and we have to find a common ground.

This post was sparked by a conversation on Twitter last night during the weekly #RNchat. If you’re not familiar with Twitter or #RNchat please hop on over to this link and read a bit : http://rnchat.org/. Let’s just say it’s all kinds of awesome. A great place to learn, socialize, grow, connect and collaborate with some of your fellow professionals from all over the world! It’s truly amazing the commonality we as professionals share once you get to talking with them. I highly recommend getting on Twitter and checking out #RNchat (I think they have been meeting every Thursday @ 9pm EST). OK, enough of the plugging and promoting.

Denying that this barrier exists is not going to fix the problem. Ignoring the problem only makes it stronger. I think we need to start talking about it more, actively sparking dialog, and start sifting through the ‘garbage’ out there to make some real progress at eliminating this negativity.

The truth is the ‘new nurses’ need to realize and appreciate where the profession started and how the profession may progress, but the way we care for our patients never changes. The ‘old nurses’ need to accept that change is the only guaranteed element in our profession and that progress does not mean the care we give will change. I mean lets be honest here, why are we even using these damn labels?

Knowledge is the ultimate playing card, and anything that enhances our hand has to be a good thing. We need to stop drawing the lines in the sand, and start erasing them! Teamwork and unity will trump singularity and taking sides any day.

Any day!

What do you think folks? Am I delusional? I always love to hear your thoughts.

If I Had My Own TV Show

Posted by Sean on April 9, 2011

It just may show John Q. Public what the life of a nurse is really like

nurse jackie

I have this dream in a far off land that we could actually have a show that depicts and represents nurses and the nursing profession as properly as possible.

I know, drama and action are what draws viewers, so it would have to have a good story line since not all of nursing is all that exciting.

Maybe a reality show on surviving nursing school? Or a reality show on being a new nurse in a fast-paced environment like the ED or ICU?

Anything that would get the public away from the white caps, white uniforms, doctor's hand-maidens, and sexy nurse myths and over generalizations.

Hmm..

Dare to dream.

It’s never been about how you start

Posted by Sean on April 8, 2011

I ‘borrowed’ this video from this blog post here: Have You Fallen And Can’t Get Up?

Getting back up

It’s about how you finish. Do you get up when you fall and press on or do you give up and stay down.

If you fall 10 times get up 11. If you fall 1 time, get up 2. Be sure to always get back up. Rise to the challenge, never accept a fall.

It’s always been about how you finish.

Prove the Impossible

Posted by Sean on April 8, 2011

Here’s a lil motivation for you on this Friday evening brought to you by the beasts over at Elite Fitness Systems:

PR

If this doesn’t get your blood pumping just a lil.. then you may wanna check your pulse. I’m about as far from power lifting as one can get, but the beasts over at EFS know there sh*t. Pretty much all the training tips, trick and principles can be applied to any and everything you do to improve yourself physically.

Of course I’m not going to be deadlifting or squatting numerous plates, but I sure will use the energy, education and down right genius nature of what they are speaking. If you aren’t then you’re missing the boat.

I can’t remember where I read it, but I believe Henry Rollins is quoted in saying that, “The iron never lies” – in fact as I type that I believe it’s a verse from a song from his band. What it means to me : no matter how much ‘fluff’ and no matter how much synthetic or transparent means you may use to boost your ego, when it’s you versus the steel (meaning the weights) the truth always comes out in the end.

You can’t fake your way out from underneath or behind the steel. If you try, you will get hurt.

I always enjoy the parable of animate versus inanimate. At the most basic level that’s what we are talking about here. Moving something that doesn’t move on it’s own. How much to you have in your tank? How much desire? How much strength? How much cojones!?

What’s even better about this wonderful battle is the way in which you can measure your effort and your progress just by adding or subtracting a piece of the steel.

I guess that whole K.I.S.S. principle just won’t sleep huh?

Oh, and the minute you think it’s about physiology and muscle fibers and energy muscle storage.. is the minute you lose.

The quick fix to losing weight

Posted by Sean on April 8, 2011

While this is rather comical (duh- it’s a comic strip) it also hits a nerve. This really is the attitude most have when it comes to losing weight/ fitness / health / etc.
For some crazy reason they think that they weight they are carrying around that took them decades to gain can miraculously be eliminated over a short ‘spurt’ of sweating or dieting.
Sorry folks, it ain’t happening. Not safely, not effectively, and surely not permanently.
Sure if you wanna drop 10bls in a week – it’s entirely feasible. But don’t think it will stay stay off permanently when you starve yourself or use some crazy crack-pot exercise scheme.
Slow and steady wins the race. Slow and steady.

Are you hurt or injured?

Posted by Sean on April 8, 2011

Does anyone remember the college football movie from the early 90′s ‘The Program’ starring James Cann, Omar Epps, and believe it or not Halle Berry. One of my favorite lines in the movie is when Epps’ character, a running back, gets drilled in practice.
As he’s lying there in the middle of the field motionless Cann, the coach, asks him if, “are ya hurt, or are ya injured”.
The dazed football player asks what’s the difference.
“Well if you’re injured then we’ll have someone take a look at your injuries and you can get sit out- and not play. But if you’re injured you can still play”.
Anyone who is a competitor will tell you they remember playing hurt, because ‘hurt don’t hurt’. Nobody wanted to be injured, because that meant you don’t play!

Ahh.. gewd times.

Where are society’s priorities?

Posted by Sean on April 7, 2011

It seems I’m just one confused citizen.
-begin rant_
How can a ‘rapper’ who publicly admits to illegal activities be rewarded with more money (in the form of record sales).
Don’t worry folks. No need to follow the law, or pursue higher education, just be able to string words into a sentence, make sure they sort-of rhyme and you’ll be fine.
If you can make yourself look like a miscreant and a thug, it would probably help you ploy. And of course condoning or partaking in illegal activity will up your ante.
The less you contribute to our society, the more you will benefit.
Things like this just piss me off folks. Here I am busting my arse to elevate my education and quite honestly try to improve the lives of others (as a nurse) and I’ll never be ‘rolling’ in the dough. Neither will the educators of our society.
This pot-smoking fine citizen here on the other hand will make 4X as much as me in one year alone.
And you wonder why we have the problems we have.
*sigh*

-end rant-

ATLANTA – With a blond streak running up his uncombed Afro, rapper Wiz Khalifa leans back in his chair seemingly without a care in the world, as the aroma of marijuana rises from his gray sweater.

This is a snapshot of rap’s newest sensation.

“Weed is just my thing,” says the 23-year-old, whose latest album, “Rolling Papers,” debuted this week at No. 2 on the album charts with more than 198,000 copies sold, putting him right behind Britney Spears.

“I smoke because that’s where my mind belongs. It’s better for me. I hear music clearer and differently. It makes my writing much more enjoyable. At the end of the day, I don’t depend on it. I’m just one of those people who like to be high all the time.”

Some say the 6-foot-4 Khalifa, who skyrocketed up the charts with his omnipresent hit “Black and Yellow,” reminds them of a younger version of Snoop Dogg, a rapper who he idolizes. They’re both tall and lanky; they also have a fondness for marijuana with carefree attitudes. The older rapper has taken Khalifa under his wing, and they’ve even recorded together.

“He’s sort of taken some inspiration from Snoop as this lovable pothead kind of dude,” says Elliott Wilson, founder of the hip-hop Web site RapRadar.com. “He gives off good energy. He laughs a lot and cackles on the track. He seems like a personable dude. He’s already built his core audience and now he’s trying to reach a different audience too — and bring them into the party.”
