Patients that are ‘outside their minds’!

Posted by Sean on May 14, 2011

My latest post over at Scrubs Magazine. Care to add to the list?

Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. I truly love my job. I think I’m one of those nurses that actually enjoys what I do – the good and the bad. I don’t view our profession through a pair of rose colored glasses (at least I try not to). I keep it realistic. There are good and bad days, good and bad jobs, good and bad patients.

Sometimes you wonder what gets into our patients. I completely empathize and understand that we see them at some of the worst times of their life. I also can appreciate the level of fear and anxiety they must endure while they are recovering – but sometimes…. I mean… sometimes… our patients must be ‘outside their minds’!!! (sorry, yet another movie quote)

Here are some things (and some patients) that just blow me away:

  • The patient who thinks that the hospital is really a Howard Johnson hotel/motel. I’m a nurse not your personal assistant. This is a hospital not a bed and breakfast.
  • The patient who all of sudden loses their ability to pick up a glass of water that is within arms reach. There is tired, then there is just down-right laziness.
  • The patient who thinks I won’t figure out they have been smoking in the bathroom. What’s that I smell in the bathroom? No, someone isn’t burning leaves outside your window. Nice try.
  • Honesty truly is the best medicine. Lying will only make you feel better – not get better. When referring to your version of your alcohol use, and I can smell it on your breath – don’t tell me it was mouthwash. C’mon. Seriously?
  • The pain scale is not open for interpretation. Telling me your pain is a 15/10 will not get you your medication any faster. Especially when (according to you) the pain medication I bring you (and that was ordered by your physician) is not strong enough.
  • Oh, along the same lines of the pain scale example, referring to your pain medication as ‘Percs’ or ‘Vics’ or your ‘Oxy’ does not help the situation.
  • By the way, the nursing staff does talk amongst each other. When you tell me, “that other nurse said it was ok / that other nurse allowed me” do you really think I’m going to let you have something to eat when you’re NPO.

There truly is a method to our madness, I promise. We don’t have it ‘in’ for you. We nurses are here to help you get better, get healthier and get the heck out of the hospital. But we can’t help those, who can’t help themselves.

(Please be sure to notice the heavy sarcasm and humorous tone of my sensible nature)

Happy belated Nurses week

Posted by Sean on May 11, 2011

It’s a tad late, but here’s my post from Scrubs Magazine.

My thoughts on the irony of our week of national recognition.

National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6, also known as National Nurses Day, through May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.
ANA Nursing World

What are you doing for National Nurses Week? Any special plans, activities or traditions? I know that every hospital I’ve ever known and ever hospital I’ve ever worked for usually has some festivities planned no matter how great or small. Anything from a single day to activities that can span the entire 7 days that come with a full-fledged ‘program of events’.

I used to think that the bigger the facility the bigger the ‘event’, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason. I know some small offices put on quite a ‘show’ for their nursing staff, and I’ve heard of and have known a couple large organizations that almost forget it exists.

Some of the things I’ve witnessed and been a part of include free meals (that can vary from one meal to daily meals for the week), raffles for prizes (scrub uniforms, shoes, equipment, etc.), large extravagant presentations and conferences, free t-shirts (and other paraphernalia), and raffle drawings for free time off (personal time). The list is endless.

I find that when there are nurses behind the driving force for the activities, they tend to be more ‘worth it’ and a heck of a lot more entertaining.

Aside from the almost ‘expected’ activities from facilities that ‘employee’ nurses, what do you do personally (speaking to fellow nurses)? I mean this is a full week to celebrate anything and everything that you do as a nurse and all that in encompasses. You have to do something special don’t you?

Unfortunately I tend to think most of us don’t do a whole lot for ourselves. Some nurses forget the event even exists! Hard to believe isn’t it? Most nurses will answer by saying, “there is something going on at work.”

I’m not sure why, but we nurses spend 365 days a year working our butts off, pouring our hearts, our blood, our sweat and our tears into this amazing profession and most of the time all we want is a little recognition for a job well done. I know that most of us sure do feel unappreciated at times (some more than others). We may not say it out loud, but we love when someone validates our efforts – yet we rarely get it.

So.

Here’s the irony. We actually have an entire week dedicated to us and our awesome profession. The one time of the year we can shine and soak up some much needed attention from the public – yet we don’t take advantage of the nationally recognized event?

Maybe it’s due to the fact that most of us our humble. I’m not sure.

I think I’ve said this more than once….

We nurses are funny bunch aren’t we.

Happy national Nurses week to all my fellow warriors out there. You deserve the recognition. Thank you for all that you do.

The dreaded shift flip-flop

Posted by Sean on May 11, 2011

Amy, over at Scrubs Magazine gives a wonderful synopsis on one of the many reasons why the night shift is so difficult.

I’ve made this argument before—to no avail. Day people just don’t get what it’s like to work nights. They call me at 2PM (my 2AM) to ask scheduling questions. Or the really annoying phone call at 5PM on my day off asking if I can come in for that evenings shift after I “take a little nap.” How safe is it to work 13 hours on a one-hour nap? Nope, they don’t get it.

Another “Night Nurse Rant” | Scrubs Magazine

It’s stories like these that make me thankful to not be on the night shift. I can remember quite vividly how frustrating that was. Be sure to hop on over and read her whole post.

World War II Veterans Documentary

Posted by Sean on May 11, 2011

The Story of Stars and Stripes Honor Flight – Documentary Trailer

Help spread this important message:

This story is incredible. Send this touching two-minute video about World War II veterans to FIVE friends and family to remind them that every day alive in this great, free country is truly a bonus. Let’s get 50,000 views for the video by Memorial Day (May 30th) to show these living heroes, one last time, just how grateful we are for their unbelievable sacrifice. The video is a trailer to a documentary that will come out in November. The more we can show interest in the trailer (i.e. views), the more Americans will get to see the film. Time is running out: 1,000 WWII vets die every day. We are free today because of these men and women. The least we can do is watch a web video and send it to five people. Let’s get this mission done!

This was one of those email forwards you just cannot pass up. How can you not feel obligated to at least pass on this message about a documentary about these veterans. At such a young age they sacrificed their lives so that we can live ours. I don’t think I need to tell you how much was lost during that war do I?

Please be sure to pass this on.
