Happy New Year everyone!

It’s that time of the year again. Time to stake your claim. What will 2017 be for you? What do you have planned? How will this year be YOUR year?

I adopted a new tradition last year, borrowed from the infamous Chris Brogan:

Since 2006, I’ve been inviting people to shift how they approach their year and how they frame their goals and intentions. I created the “My 3 Words” exercise because most resolutions aren’t especially helpful. We decide something vague like “I’ve gotta get in shape” or “I’ve gotta quit smoking” or “I need to make more money” but while these are all great goals, they’re not really useful as ways to guide our activities throughout the year. I thought that maybe we could come up with something better, something more useful, something that would work within our thought process daily and not just for the first seven or eight days of the new year.

My 3 Words for 2015

My first attempt at this challenge was last year, right after my life-changing knee injury. Last year was a year of learning. Learning about myself, my family and my friends. Learning about what was really important in my life. And learning about me as an entrepreneur.

Here were my 3 words for 2016:

  1. Unapologetic
  2. Acknowledge
  3. Drive

I did great with #1, I came out of my shell and stayed genuinely me. I’m still battling with #2 as this year begins. I’m still suffering from the imposter syndrome, I’m a work in progress. I’ve begun to call myself an entrepreneur. As for #3, I did successfully recover from my surgery but I still have farther to go (in my mind). As for my business ventures, they changed like the tide. I’m still learning where I fit.

  1. New Year. New Goals.

Here are my 3 words for 2017:

  1. Hustle
  2. Speak
  3. Boss

It’s time for me to work smarter, not harder. I already work hard, hell I’ve been elevating my game for the past several years. But working harder without specificity or a target is just effort. I want results

I will become a speaker this year. Even if that means doing it for free. I need to develop my skill and learn the craft. I have a goal of becoming a keynote speaker within the next 3 years.

I will become the entrepreneur I know I can be. I will create my business, with me as the CEO. I am finally starting to understand what the market wants and what I can offer it. I’ve been rooting around for several years trying to get my voice heard, when instead,  I need to listen to what the tribe is asking for and give it to them.
