What do nurses do when their patient refuses care?

What do you do when your patient refuses the care you are providing?

They’ve been admitted to your facility, but they’re not wanting what you’re offering!

It’s very confusing the first time you experience this. The patient is there for medical treatment (in some capacity), but they are refusing (all or pieces of) care?

Hmm. They are refusing an intervention, a treatment therapy or maybe just refusing to eat??

I offer some tips that might help:

  1. Can you negotiate? Appeal to their needs.
  2. Consider bargaining.
  3. May have to ultimately surrender. It IS their choice.
  4. Scare tactics? [use cautiously]
