I’m Taking The BS(N) Plunge!

Posted by Sean on May 2, 2009

There is no turning back now. It’s official. I’m a student (again). I’m a student for the 4th time.

As of yesterday the journey to my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN) has begun.

So here’s a little history.

I already HAVE one Bachelor’s degree. I have a Bachelor’s of Science in Exercise and Sport Science with a concentration in Athletic Training. As most of you know, I’m not actively practicing as an ATC these days. I am a full-time RN.

Being a nurse and the nursing field is actually my 3rd career. Yes, you read that right, 3rd career.

Quick rewind of my career and education:

  • Entered college as an Engineering major
  • Dropped Engineering major after 2 yrs – started Exercise Sport Science
  • Graduated after 5 more years of school
  • During college and after graduation worked for Retail chain
  • First year post graduation continued work in Retail as well as did per diem personal training
  • First couple jobs as an ATC was horrible due to low pay.
  • Left ATC world, back to retail world for better pay. Became a manager for 2 yrs.
  • Realized how much I did not like the life of retail – back to ATC
  • ATC for another couple years – got hurt as well as kindly reminded of lifestyle and lack of pay
  • Applied for nursing school. Back to school (2nd time) to finish pre-req’s for RN diploma school
  • RN diploma school (3rd time) – graduated
  • Working as Full-time RN – now delving back into personal training
  • Seeking Bachelor’s in Nursing to ensure long-term career placement and advancement. (4th time)

Whew.

Yes, it’s been a long journey and there doesn’t seem to be an end. This time around my BSN won’t take too long since I already HAVE a Bachelor’s in a health related field.

Luckily I will only need a total of 3 semesters. 3 semesters later I will attain my Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing.

Woo Hoo.

Wish me luck.

I still want to blog about my nursing world, just don’t know how it will work into my current blog’s state of affairs?

I thought about creating another blog? But that would be such a hassle.

I guess I’ll keep on blogging here although the darn name and theme will confuse the heck out of my visitors. I have visitors from the fitness and exercise world, then I have my nurse and health care world visitors.

I wish I could find a happy medium.

Maybe I jumped the gun by changing my domain name?? Grr.

I would love to hear suggestions from my readers (the few I have).

  1. What do you think about my new domain name forward/change from the mystrongmedicine to blog.bethenextstep?
  2. Where should I blog about fitness?
  3. Where should I blog about nursing?
  4. Should I separate my blogging themes or keep them all in one place?
  5. Should I go back to mystrongmedicine.com? Or keep blog.bethenextstep.com?
  6. Is my blog more and more confusing these days?

I truly look forward to any and all suggestions. If not through the comments, please send me an email. I’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for sticking around my merry-go round-like blog.

Diving Into BeTheNextStep.com

Posted by Sean on April 9, 2009

SunsetTandem

So it’s been a lil over 2 weeks now since my ‘coming-out’ party where I revealed me and my identity. If you missed it here it is.

Strong One = Sean Dent

What spurred this ‘party’ was me diving head first into being a wellness coach. I created a new website with pictures and info explaining my intentions and aspirations. Locally, I have been receiving a lot of inquiries and interest regarding information and advice on fitness, wellness, etc. So I thought what better way to share that information than through the Web 2.0!

During this initial explosion, when I created the new website, I thought I had to use the provided ‘cookie-cutter’ blog that was provided. I spent the past 2 weeks tweaking what could be modified and importing everything non-nursing to this new blog.

Last night I discovered all my efforts were basically for naught. Doh

It seems that I have the option to use an existing blog with my new website. I can change the setting’s and viola’! When someone clicks on the BLOG link on my new website… TA-DA they arrive here.

Now it may be a lil’ confusing, since visitors will be at the bethenextstep.com domain and when they click the blog link it brings them to mystrongmedicine.com link. But I think I’m going to take the risk at this point.

This way I can keep my original blog (which I still very much like), keep chugging away with my new website and project, and not have to worry about blogging to two separate blogs!

WHEW…Whew

So stay tuned for more excitement. I now will be posting more often again!!

To Kvetch or not to Blog

Posted by Sean on March 15, 2009

Most of my blogging has been an avenue for sharing my ideas, my thoughts, as well as a way to ‘vent’ my frustrations and channel my ‘life’s adventures’.

These days I don’t have a lot to say through my blog.

Striving for ‘A Complaint Free World’ means changing my thoughts. Changing my thoughts allows me to change my habits. The biggest habits of all being ‘venting’, ‘decompressing’ and GOSSIP.

A habit which I thought was healthy until now.

What motivates you to read a blog?

I’d like to know why do you read someone’s blog?

What draws you in?

What keeps your attention?

How did you land on that blog’s page?

Was it by accident? Or are you visiting by a recommendation? Maybe a friend of a friend? Are they a fellow member of a group? Maybe a link from another blog you read?

I think we all have the same habits to our daily doses of internet informa-tude. Our ritual websites we visit, read, comment and browse through. We all probably have a custom home page we created to accommodate all of our many tastes & interests.

I’m curious to learn what is it that grabs your attention? Does the title of the blog matter?

I’m curious to learn what is it that keeps your attention?

Inquiring minds wanna know. Thinking

The Recycled Web 2.0

Posted by Sean on January 13, 2009

So we blog : we share information
Then we Tweet : to share our blog information as well as more information
Now we are blogging what we tweet (and blog)??
Round and round we go…

tweetsuite-logoDan Zarrella, who introduced us to Tweetbacks last week, has released a new WordPress plugin that takes the concept to the next level. Dubbed TweetSuite, the plugin builds on TweetBacks utility of displaying all of the tweets that link back to a blog post by throwing a few extra goodies in the mix.

TweetSuite adds a server side fully-featured TweetBacks service, complete with a Digg-style “Tweet This” button at the top of each post, a “Retweet This” button for each TweetBack, widgets for your sidebar, and the ability to automatically update Twitter with your latest blog entries.

tweetsuite example

The self-explanatory sidebar widgets (you can customize which ones you want to display) include a Recently Tweeted widget, My Last-Tweets widget, Most-Tweeted widget, and My-Favorited Tweets Widget. That’s a lot of widgets, and they all serve very different, but useful purposes for super-tweeters who want to easily display relevant Twitter content to blog visitors. My personal favorite is the Most-Tweeted widget, which works in the same way as standard Popular Posts widgets, displaying your blog entries that get the most Twitter love in your sidebar.

If you add TweetSuite to your WordPress blog, leave a comment with a link to your site so we can check out how you’re using it!
