Aggressive and Unprofessional Behavior | Nurse Bullying Part 1

This is the first in a series of videos where I address bullying in nursing and the lateral violence we experience in our workplace.

What happens when that provider throws a tantrum? Screams from across the room? Raises their voice in an unprofessional manner?

Here are my thoughts:

  1. Recognize the politics involved.
  2. Be informed and armed with knowledge when you confront them. Don’t use personal opinions.
  3. Were all parties aware of their actions? Was it on purpose?
  4. Is this a singular occurrence? Or a repeated behavior?
  5. How is this behavior affecting patient care?
  6. How is this behavior affecting team dynamics?

Have you ever had an argument with a drunk?

Have you ever had an argument with a drunk?

Lateral violence and bullying are not going away anytime soon.

One of the ways we can learn to win this battle is to not partake in the fight at all. Being the bigger person is not easy, but it is very effective.

Have you ever had an argument with a drunk?

How effective was that fight??

I offer some simple advice that just might change the culture. I am by no means saying we don’t stick up for ourselves and speak up. I just think trying to fight a bully at work is akin to negotiating with a drunk at the bar.

It really doesn’t matte what you say or do.. they’re not going to listen to you. The best way to win the fight with a drunk… don’t give them the recognition (attention) that they’re looking for.

Know whatta mean?
