This is the state of the world today when a child has reflux disease that needs prescription medication.
What are we doing to ourselves.

New Research: Why Never Spanking Might Be Worse for Kids Than Spanking Them – NurtureShock Blog – Newsweek.com

No I do not have children of my own, but I have my fair share of children in my life. So please don’t judge my opinion as false just because I have not had the blessing of raising my own children.

I find this article interesting because it drives home the one thing I have been saying all these years about ‘spanking’ or ‘disciplining’ children. I for one support spanking – but more importantly I support consistent disciplining.

then perhaps the consistency of discipline is more important than the form of discipline. In other words, spanking regularly isn’t the problem; the problem is having no regular form of discipline at all.

I was ‘spanked’ as a child. Discipline was always present in my household as a child.

I don’t think I’m the only one that has noticed the ‘out-of-control’ children and ”disrespectful’ youth that populate our streets these days. I often wonder if discipline or ‘spanking’ was part of their rearing?

Things that make you go hmmm.

Spanking detrimental to children, study says – CNN.com.

OK.

Opening up a huge can of worms here.

To say spanking is detrimental to children and that you shouldn’t spank AT ALL is quite the over-generalization – don’t you think? Yes I believe in being careful how it is used, when it is used, and exactly how you are doing it. But, using it appropriately for behavioral problems and teaching the child the difference between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ is very effective.

No. I am not saying you need to abuse your child. I’m not saying spanking is the ONLY way to teach. I’m not saying that you need to raise your every time they do something wrong, disobey, act-up, etc. I’m simply saying that spanking your child has its place.

I don’t care what this or any other ‘study’ says. I don’t care what Dr. Spock and all his followers say. I CAN tell you that from personal experience, as well as from family and friend observation, that the absence of spanking yields a very different child and very different behavior.

Yes I think there are two sides to this coin and that parenting is a learned skill that no one will ever truly master.

But to say spanking is the root cause for a decrease in thinking skills??

C’mon?!

I guess my feelings for these type of studies ranks up there with trying to correlate child hood nose-picking with being a future threat to society. (Yes, these are actual studies!).

I hate smoking. It’s no secret. Smoking has no benefits for me, my family, my friends, or anyone I care about. Smoking contributes nothing to anyone’s way of life.

Smoking takes. It takes away and takes from anything and everything it touches. It’s nothing but bad on all levels.

I really don’t think I need to explain WHY and where my hatred originates for smoking and anything related to it. (I would love someone to argue one ‘benefit’ or one ‘positive’ piece of information when referring to this habit)

So President Obama seems to be taking at least one smart step during his travels while staying in the white house.

Word is he’s signing the infamous HR 1256: Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act into law soon!

Here’s what’s involved in this new legislation:

Cigarette packages will have warning labels that cover 50 percent of the front and rear. The word "warning" must be included in capital letters.

Any remaining tobacco-related sponsorships of sports and entertainment events will be banned, as will giveaways of non-tobacco items with the purchase of a tobacco product. A federal ban will be imposed on all outdoor tobacco advertising within 1,000 feet of schools and playgrounds.

Point-of-sale advertising will be limited to adults-only facilities, and remaining vending machines will disappear except in places restricted to adults. Retailers who sell to minors will be subject to federal enforcement and penalties.

Smokers, particularly the younger crowd, will find they can no longer buy cigarettes sweetened by candy flavors or any herb or spices such as strawberry, grape, orange, clove, cinnamon or vanilla. Cigarettes advertised as "light" or "mild," giving the impression that they aren’t as harmful to health, will no longer be found on store shelves.

The last piece of information, in my opinion, is going to have a huge impact on our youth.

It’s about time Mr. President.

It’s about time.

Carpe Diem

Do you <strike>CRAVE</strike> like Marshmallows? (WHO DOESN’T?)

Ever fail at a diet? Having a hard time losing weight? How about your fitness level? Are you exercising enough? How about those bad habits?

The list is endless. Each item listed involves you and your willpower to do or not do something.

WILLPOWER:

the ability to exert one’s will over one’s actions.

We all succeed or fail due to the strength of our own willpower. Which is stronger? Your willpower or the influence?

It seems that our children really do have all the answers, they just don’t know it. (And neither do we) There was a study done years ago that evaluated a child’s willpower to not eat a certain candy item. Some children of course exerted no willpower and at the first opportunity inhaled the candy.

Please watch the following video: (This experiment was done with M&M’s)

M&M Dilleys Experiment (If embed doesn’t work)

It’s amazing.

Two separate techniques are revealed on ways to help your own willpower:

shift your attention away whenever temptation crops up

re-focusing your mind on the long-term implications of the very short-term indulgence that’s just out of reach

So, then next time temptation rears its ugly head.. think of those children and the candy.

If they can do it…

So can we.

Carpe Diem

This blog entry was inspired by a blog post on Lifehacker – Learn Willpower Techniques from the Marshmallow Test – Habits

Yes you’ve heard of the attempt at banning cell phone use while driving. To me and most others, it’s common sense to pay attention to your driving, and NOT to your phone. Especially trying to send and receive text messages while driving!

Now it seems children are learning distraction at an early age. Instead of driving while texting, they are walking and texting? Which in some cases has led to walking out in the middle of an intersection full of oncoming traffic??!!
