Crunching.. I Mean Gritting My Teeth

Posted by Sean on February 3, 2011

GRRR.
It really bothers me when things like this happen. This article goes under the assumption that the public is.. uhhm.. misinformed.
Unfortunately they are.
Amazing how the anti-crunch movement has been around for over a decade, yet it still hasn’t made it mainstream.

No More Crunches? Abs-olutely!

Read more at www.thepostgame.com

This isn’t a revolutionary concept among fitness professionals. It’s been out there for at least a decade. But you’d never know it by watching what people in health clubs do. Sit-ups may be out of fashion, but the basic crunch is alive and well and performed by almost everyone trying to improve his or her appearance.

“People think the crunch is the equivalent of a biceps curl,” says Lou Schuler, co-author of the book “The New Rules of Lifting For Abs.” “You pick up a dumbbell, you bend your elbow, and you feel the biceps working. You know exactly what you’re doing, and why. So when you do a crunch, you feel the abdominal muscles shortening, and you think you’re doing the exact same thing. You’re making the muscles bigger and stronger.”

Believe it or not, the humble ab wheel offers one of the best examples of how your abdominal muscles function. If you’ve ever used one, you know how hard it is at first to roll the wheel out and extend your arms away from your body. And you also know how sore your abs will be 36 hours later.

Sit-ups:Please Stop Doing Them

Posted by Sean on November 7, 2010

I’m still speechless that there are people out there who not only promote them, but still swear by them. The old adage of sit ups = six-pack abs is simply just not true.
A strong core is not the result of doing sit-ups, let alone 200 of them! The sit-up is not only unsafe on many levels (for your cervical spine, lumber spine, sacral complex to name a few), but it fails to properly challenge your ‘core’.
Your core is a muscle complex that involves the mid-section (not just your abdominals). I won’t bore you with the specifics – let’s just say your core is at work throughout just about every movement your make.
It’s a dynamic and static total body stabilizer. To sit on the floor and flex at your hips does your ‘core’ an injustice, since the majority of your ‘core’ isn’t even activated while performing the sit-up.
Take 5 minutes and ‘Google’ the word ‘core’. Then hop on over to YouTube and search for ‘core exercise’.
Let me know how many times you see the sit-up.
Better yet, try any of the novice ‘core’ exercises. Can you honestly say a sit-up ‘works’ you the same?
I’m not making this up, really I’m not. It’s no secret.
I just feel anyone ‘serious’ about their core strength shouldn’t waste their time.

Best of luck out there!

Did Anyone Else Notice Yahoo!’s Incorrect Advice? Wrong To The ‘Core’ I Say

Posted by Sean on February 12, 2010

So in Yahoo!’s infinite wisdom they are appealing to the ‘resolutioner’s out there. They’ve decided to give you some great, easy-to-do, ‘guaranteed’, and ‘simple’ exercises that are SURE to ‘flatten’ your tummy:

2 Killer Moves for a Flat Tummy – Healthy Living on Shine

And it will only take 2 exercises!

YES! Just 2!

I’ll only ‘comment’ on one of their suggested ‘go-to’ exercises. The Plank. If you do this simple exercise you’ll be on your way to that flat tummy:

Get into a push-up position with your forearms on the floor.
- Lift your legs and torso up off the ground so that only your toes and the flats of your forearms remain on the floor.
- Keeping your back neutral and your belly button pulled in, hold this position for 20-60 seconds.

So here is the provided picture to help visualize what you should be doing:

Did anyone notice? So much for that ‘keeping your back neutral’ thing ehh?

Copy of plank

Taking into account the room for error and the tricks a 2-D picture can make when it’s a 3-D character – there is still something off here.

I’m no expert, but it seems like a lil’ incorrect form? Or am I just nitpicking? Now, don’t get me wrong, I will be the first one to support this exercise. This basic ‘core’ exercise is the building block for a stronger, solid and tighter mid-section – but c’mon guys..

I guess I’m of the opinion if you’re going to provide sound advice, be sure it’s ‘sound’ before you go splashing it on the front page.

Things that make you go hmm..
