The flu season can make a nurse act crazy

8 crazy things nurses do during flu season

As nurses, we get very comfortable with our obsessive compulsive behaviors.

During the flu season our OCD-like nature gets ramped up simply because of the obvious – more people are sick.

Whether it’s from a new strain of the influenza virus or maybe the idea of people refusing (or plain neglecting) to get the vaccine, here are ways to take some extra precautions to ensure we don’t get the flu….

1. Pay with credit or debit

Can you imagine the filth and germs hanging out on that paper money… or those coins? We all took microbiology. We know what can hang on!

2. Avoid mass transit transportation

Everything from the subway, bus transit, planes, etc. (Please refer to “taking the stairs”) Who wants to be huddled up next to someone with a snotty, runny nose? You have nowhere to go!

3. Take the stairs

Elevators are a no-no. What if someone sneezes!! Seriously?!

4. Personal stash of disinfectant wipes

Who knows when you may need to use a public telephone, a public computer, or worse yet… have to pull open the door to exit a public bathroom instead of pushing the door!

5. Wear long sleeves everywhere

For that one time you use a public bathroom and you have to pull the door instead of push the door to exit. Need I remind you that not everyone washes their hands after they’re finished? (Oh, you know I’m right.)

6. Avoid salad bars and buffet meals (including family ones)

Some people forget how the food is actually made and prepared. Yes, those employed by a business establishment wears gloves. They are required by law, but what about your family? Or your friend’s football party??

7. Refuse and/or deny any requests to borrow your cell phone

I’m pretty sure you can figure out why.

8. And of course, this is a given: We wash our hands. And then we wash them again. And again. And again.

What do you do to avoid the flu?!

A Nurse and the H1N1 Flu Panic

Posted by Sean on November 2, 2009

Yep. This swine flu/ pig flu/ H1N1 flu / (insert scary name) is really starting to gnaw at my nerves. Fact vs. Fiction can really cause quite a stir in the public. There is a reason why there is such a public ‘concern’ about this new virus. We caused it.

Yes, you read that right.

WE as in the public. As in society. As in all of us. We caused this. We failed at properly educating the public. Educating those on the who/what/when/where/why’s of this new virus.

Yes, we (I use this term loosely) are making strides to better inform everyone NOW – after the fact. We are NOW trying to calm everyone down by delivering the proper message. Making a valiant attempt at extinguishing the ‘fire’ we created.

I thought you might like to read my latest blog post over at Scrubs Magazine. Follow the link for the rest: A Nurse and the H1N1 Flu Panic

Arm Yourself This Flu Season

Posted by Sean on October 13, 2009

To fight flu, arm your immune system with diet, rest – CNN.com.

It’s no secret. The flu – and I mean ANY flu, wreaks havoc on you body. Everyone as of late has been in a slight panic over the H1N1 virus and the ensuing ‘swine’ flu. How to prevent it? How to avoid it?

A lot of talk, discussion, chatter and disagreement has been over the vaccine itself. To get vaccinated or not? Do the benefits outweigh the risks.

Aside from those individuals with already compromised immune systems and the high risk populations, I’m here to tell you to stick to the basics. Stick to what has worked, what does work, and what will continue to work in the fight against that horrible monster called the flu: Monitor Your Health. Not only monitor it, but maximize it to its fullest potential.

In other words, take care of yourself and your body. Trust me, it’s the only one you get.

The article above from CNN highlights what we should already know, but just in case you forgot, or would like a kind reminder, here are some key tips to help keep you armed against this deadly foe.

  • Boost your immune system: get the vaccine (if you feel comfortable doing so)
  • Good nutrition: eat the right foods. Stay away from the saturated fatty foods. More vegetable. More lean protein
  • Supplements: This is just an added boost to your regular diet. Be sure to get most of your needed vitamins from the foods you eat. Adding a lil extra w0n’t hurt.
  • Exercise: I don’t care what it is. Just do it. Get out there, and get moving. The more often the better. The more intense, the better.
  • Sleep: This is the BIG one. Everyone functions on too little sleep. And while this works for a short time, your body will kindly remind you when it needs its rest. A tired body = a weakened immune system.

If after all this you still lose the battle and get the flu (any flu!), be sure to handle it properly. Don’t force yourself to make it to work. Don’t drag your butt to the gym. Your body will only recover if you allow it. Sleep, sleep and more sleep. After that, sleep some more. During the waking hours drink as much fluids as possible due to the dehydration that sets in from losing all your fluids via the Kleenex. A quick tip: those headaches and body aches are ‘mostly‘ due to dehydration. Fluids, fluids and more fluids.

The flu is a virus, plain and simple. There is no amount of medication that will hasten or shorten your suffering. You have to simply ‘ride it out’. All those wonderful over the counter medications are simply hiding (masking) the ‘symptoms’ of your flu, not eliminating the virus.

I wish you the best of luck this flu season.

Actively Immunized I am I am

FluMan

Yep. I got it. I got a dead virus injected into my upper arm today.

I cannot tell you when I started getting the flu shot. All I know is I get it every year. I’m not one to be superstitious, but I’m superstitious about the flu shot.

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I have subliminally convinced myself that the flu shot ‘helps’. Heck.. maybe I’m delusional.

All I know is, that ever since I started getting the flu shot my winters are less miserable. My ‘flu season’ is not littered with empty boxes of Kleenex, baggy-eyed, and foggy headed misery.

If I do get ‘sick’, if I do get ‘the flu’, it is short-lived and not nearly as painful.

For some the flu shot doesn’t work…

For some the flu shot actually makes you sick…

All I know is I rather partake in an activity that may lessen my chances of misery than none at all.

Just sayin’.
