Why I knew I was a nurse

Posted by Sean on April 3, 2011

This is a blog post from over at Scrubs Magazine, I just had to share it here.

The day you start nursing school your life changed permanently. There is the life ‘before nursing’ and then life as a nurse. Two very different worlds.

Here are some of the ways I knew my life had changed when I became a nurse.

1. I stared using a different language

‘Rationale’ and ‘as evidenced by’ became common terminology. Really.. (only nurses will understand this one) don’t ask. Heh heh

2. Acronyms became my best friend

Patient history of COPD, CAD, DM, BKA, CVA with some JVD and new onset CHF noted. What??? Can I get vowel Alex??

3. I somehow started caring about the type pens I used to write with

A ‘fat’ pen with some cushion was like gold when you have to write narrative notes that are pages long for EACH patient you care for during a shift.

4. My bladder grew 3 sizes larger

For some strange reason I could go 12 + hours without having to use the bathroom? Is that normal?

5. Coffee was a mainstay in my diet- and still is.

Without it I don’t think I could blink properly some days

6. My sense of smell not only got sharper, but it got duller

I could identify a disorder or disease just by smelling the ‘aftermath’ or the preemptive strike. I also found that most smells stop ‘bothering me’. How weird is that?

7. Nationally celebrated holidays were simple a date on a calendar

I vaguely remember a time when I didn’t have to work, or worry about covering a shift during a holiday. But, then again, the hospital doesn’t close for the holidays.

8. I began to forget what day of the week it was.

A traditional calendar was useless. ‘What day of the week is it?” Uhm, when did I work last – let me check my work schedule. That whole ‘week day’ and ‘weekend’ thing.. Yeah it no longer applies.

9. I couldn’t call off work anymore.

Not without feeling amazingly guilty! You call off and then remember what it is like to work short handed.

10. I stopped answering my phone

Caller ID was an amazing rescue tool. Who’s calling? Is it work?

And, after it’s all said and done. I wouldn’t have done it any different. I love being a nurse.

Some universal rules from the health care universe

Posted by Sean on April 2, 2011

While the original post was all about the ER from an awesome physician blogger, I’d like to think some of them apply to many, many, many parts of the patient care arena. Yes, we nurses feel your pain doc.

9)  The more demanding a patient is, the less likely it is that they need medical care.

11)  NEVER ever go to work sick. Not only will it be an incredibly busy day, but you will be sicker than most of the patients you see.

13)  The more difficult the stick, the more likely the lab is to lose your patient’s blood sample.

15)  No extra shift that you reluctantly volunteer to work will ever be an easy shift.

18)  The nicer the patient and family, the worse the outcome will be.
19)  I can not tell the difference between very rich patients and very poor patients – they both act the same. “When it comes to my health, money is no object!”

Are society’s values a lil mixed up??

Posted by Sean on February 22, 2011

I’m not out to argue or defend homosexuality. I do however believe our society needs to rethink what THEY consider to be OK.

On Proper Nurse Staffing Ratios

Posted by Sean on June 22, 2010

Since the debacle with the nursing strike in Minnesota, the interwebs have been a-buzz about proper and safe nurse-to-patient ratios.

Is a strike really the answer?

What better way to get the facility’s attention?

Is striking really ‘safe’ for the patients?

Are nurses abandoning their duties by striking?

The list goes on. Etcetera, etcetera.

I thought I’d shed some humor on the subject courtesy of a fellow nurse-blogger in my nursosphere.

SeeJaneNurse (follow her on Twitter: here) recently posted a blog titled ‘No Hitting’. In the blog post she talked about her day and how busy it was with staffing.

Ever wanted a quantifiable way of describing our thoughts on staffing ratios? Well here you go:

One shift last week we were all at max ratio 6:1, which in my opinion is equivalent to a gangbang in the world of nursing

This just made me burst into my ‘cackle – laugh’. You hit the nail on the head.

Thanks Jane.

Exercise (Swiss) Ball Uses

Posted by Sean on June 4, 2010

OK. OK. So I found yet another ‘effective’ use of the infamous exercise ball that I tout as one of THE most useful and ‘must need’ pieces of equipment for toning and slimming that waistline.

People Of Walmart? Really??

Posted by Sean on November 7, 2009

This new viral site has been all the buzz within the social media circles and within my own personal social circle (away from the monitors and keyboards). I think it’s popularity stems from the common ‘What The F*’ thought process every time you see the public and their blatant disregard for proper public etiquette.

You have to give the guys who created the site credit for stealing a great idea. An idea that we all wish WE would have thought of!

Before it went insanely viral.. it was comical and down right entertaining. Now… I’m not as easily entertained. I’m now more ‘put-off’. I’m beside myself viewing some of these pictures. I can’t stop thinking, “REALLY? Someone actually left their house looking like that?”

I have a hard time grasping this concept, or wrapping my mind around this absurdity. Either these ‘people of walmart’ do not own a mirror, or they’re doing it on purpose.

I’m starting to lean towards the latter. I mean C’mon. Take for instance this one:

Wintery Mix | www.peopleofwalmart.com.

Really? Am I to believe this person actually looked at their outfit.. and thought… yep. I’m good to go. Let’s go shopping.

Here’s my theory:

I think the public is catching on to this site.. (or maybe the creators of the site are just as guilty) .. and these ‘people’ are purposely finding a ‘costume’ so-to-speak.. so that they can get on the internet? Or they are donning this costume.. and getting pics on this site just to generate traffic.

Is it a far-fetched idea?

Just my humble opinion.
