Is becoming an LPN a complete waste of time?

Is becoming an LPN a complete waste of time?

Would it be better to become an LPN before pursuing a career as an RN?

LPN: Licensed Practical Nurse

RN: Registered Nurse

Now, before you jump off the deep end. This is not about which option is better. This is a genuine career path decision that many nursing students have pondered.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the differences between the two roles Registered Nurse vs. LPN:

Registered Nurse vs. LPN | All Nursing Schools

Is getting your LPN before getting your RN something you should do? What about getting through LPN school, and then working as an LPN before you start RN school? Is it advantageous? Or is it a waste of time?

My answer has changed over the years. The role of the LPN is changing (at least in my experience in the hospital setting), and you need to decide if becoming and LPN is worth your time and money.

One thing to keep in mind is this. What will you gain from becoming an LPN if your final goal is to become an RN? If you only have the time and financial ability to enroll in an LPN program, then I would say go for it. You can gain a professional license and start working in the nursing force (if there is a job available). Be sure to consider the amount of time & money you will need to invest and re-invest when it comes time to enroll in the RN program.

What about a student Nurse purchasing “RN” merchandise?

onlinestore - Presentation

Is it bad Mojo to actually own paraphernalia with the letters “RN” before you’ve actually earned the title? Or is it just confidence?

That really nice stethoscope, or watch, bracelet or charm….

What about the RN going back to school for their advanced degree?

Is it bad luck to purchase merchandise with those credentials prior to taking the exam and being awarded the title (CRNP, CRNA, etc) ?

When I was a student nurse (all three times) I refused to purchase anything with my ‘future’ credentials. I thought it would throw a whammie. I didn’t dare buy that merchandise for my (possible) future. Yep, I was superstitious. I waited until I passed that infamous exam.

Check out the video below. Click the title, head on over to my Facebook page and leave me a comment. I release a video every day!
