Reducing A Fitness Myth, One Spot At A Time

Posted by Sean on July 8, 2010

There is quite a large population of people out there that believe spot reduction works (*GASP*). Yes, some if not a lot of the general public still believe that they can lose weight focused on a certain area of their body.

"I just want to lose a couple inches off my waist"

"I want to get rid of that flab on my arms"

"I need to thin out my thighs"

All of this stems from those darn info-commercials you see on TV (I seem to remember seeing them on Sunday early morning). The Thigh Master, Ab Scissor, Step Master, etc. They all promote weight loss to a specific area of the body. If you do this exercise or that exercise you’ll lose that unwanted extra weight from that body part or area of the body that your are exercising. I also think this is where the crazy idea of ‘do sit-ups to get that toned abdominal area’ originated from (GEESH).

I Resisted!

Posted by Sean on June 7, 2010

IMG00130-20100606-1136

This was sitting at the nurses station ALL DAY yesterday. Whew! I gotta tell ya. It took every bit of control I had not to dive into those boxes.

If you can’t tell, those are 2 boxes of Dunkin’ Donuts Donut Holes. They were an assortment of different kinds and flavors.

I’m only sharing this with you because I have to figure out a way to stop ‘snacking’ on the bad stuff. I (we) are eating out a little more than we normally do.

I am trying to lose juuuust a lil’ more weight. I’d really like to lose maybe 5-10 lbs (or in that range). The problem is it’s all cushy anterior abdominal belly flab. Yes – I still have some lingering. Only a lil – but enough to drive me nuts.

I know, most of you are probably wanting to kick me in the pants for complaining about 5-10 lbs – but a weight loss goal is a weight loss goal. My goal is equally as challenging because now I have to redefine and reevaluate what my eating habits are like. What else can I eliminate or minimize?

It’s not like I’m gorging on anything unhealthy? I mean the occasional pizza, but nothing ridiculous.

It’s widely known that those last pounds you lose are THE TOUGHEST.

I gotta get my game face on – unfortunately the game face will have to be postponed for about a week. Vacation is coming up and I’m out to enjoy myself.

Wearing Your Emotions On Your Sleeve – Literally

Posted by Sean on May 7, 2010

"Emotional eating may be one reason why people don’t do as well in behavioral weight loss groups, because these groups don’t address emotional eating or any of its contributing factors." Emotions Can Sabotage Weight Loss Progress

It’s not a secret. The moments of weakness are what destroy your ‘healthy eating’ or your (cough cough) diet (I still hate that word).

There isn’t a ‘program’ out there that can’t be ‘sabotaged’ by our emotions and the emotional eating we all suffer from in one way shape or form.

That IS the key to a successful transition to a healthier you – conquering your emotions. If you’re in the drivers seat instead of those flurry of uncontrollable urges –you win the immediate and long-term battle.

Don’t Believe The Hype

Posted by Sean on April 22, 2010

BMI : Body Mass Index is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women.

While many weight loss initiatives used this lil’ number as a way to measure your status and /or progress of losing weight it does not take into account lean body mass.

This study clams to underestimate obesity: Medical News: BMI Underestimates Obesity in Young Women – in Primary Care, Obesity from MedPage Today

In another study:

Currently 23% of Americans are labeled obese by BMI

It also claims we are grossly underestimating the obesity epidemic.

I measured my BMI the other day… and apparently I’m considered overweight??!!

Raised Eyebrow

Don’t believe the hype folks. Don’t believe the hype.

There's No Bargaining In Weight Loss

Posted by Sean on February 19, 2010

 diet progress

“If I eat this cheeseburger, that just means an extra 40 minutes on the treadmill”

“I’m going to have just this one… just this one donut. I’ll just squeeze in a couple more miles on the bike”

“Ooooh OK. I’ll have another piece of pie. I’ll just have to visit the gym an extra day this week”

Does any of this sound vaguely familiar? Bartering, bargaining, and rationalizing your bad eating habits, those empty promises to your body, and being comfortable with your overall eating lifestyle without the guilt. It’s that guilt factor that keeps us from becoming a down right glutton, but this habit of bargaining a food item for some extra exercise is a disastrously imbalanced deal that ultimately leads to failure.

Weight loss and ‘dieting’ (yes, I still hate that word) come down to a game of numbers. You have to get rid of more than you take in. There’s no way to trick, bend, warp or fudge those numbers. You consume a certain number of calories, and your body ‘uses up’ or ‘burns’ a certain amount of calories. We all make the deal with the devil by trying to satisfy this equation. If my actions will add ‘X’ number of calories to my body, then I have ‘work off /burn/melt” ‘X’ number of calories. That way I have net gained zero. At least that’s what we tell ourselves…

Weight Loss In A Pill – BE CAREFUL

Posted by Sean on January 19, 2010

It seems there is no limit to the almighty dollar these days. Anything to make a buck – even if it means selling a fake product. As if FAKE was not enough, the ‘fake’ replacement product can be hazardous to some populations!

The over the counter weight loss product Alli is being subjected to a harmful scam. Buyers beware!

The FDA has cracked down on the case, be sure to visit the link below and visit the FDA’s information!

Disturbing.

What’s the big fat deal?

Posted by Sean on June 13, 2009

“No one wants to hear the facts about weight loss. It’s simple. Take that bag of Doritos and throw it as far as you can. Now chase after it. Pick it up, do it again.”

Anyone who’s been to the movies in the past 7 years may remember the movie ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ starring Nia Vardalos. imageI won’t dive into the details of the movie, but let’s just say it was hit, where Nia played the lead role.

The above quote is Nia explaining her ‘secret’ to her weight loss over the past year:

Anderson Cooper 360: Blog Archive – What’s the big fat deal? « – Blogs from CNN.com

I loved the article because she talks about how Hollywood and the media are only interested in the ‘secrets’ to weight loss – not the cold,hard-to-digest truth.

The take home message being. The media, Hollywood, hell most of the population doesn’t want to hear or know how to lose weight. They want to know where the ‘silver bullet’ is. They want the quick-fast-and-in-a-hurry solution.

Don’t mention the words: work, consistency, diet, exercise, or god-forbid patience and time. That’s just too hard, too long, and frankly doesn’t fit into their life style.

They want the ‘Easy Button’ of weight loss because the truth…

Well the truth is just too damn difficult.

Way to go Nia.

Your Lifestyle Will Never Be Perfect. No One’s Is.

Posted by Sean on April 25, 2009

balancing

Yes, once again I said lifestyle, not DIET. I simply refuse to address the term.

We all know by now that the path to improved overall health and increasing your fitness level lies harshly on you and you’re DIET eating habits. Once again – "You can’t out-train a bad diet".

Let’s break it down into simple terms.

Now, for all of us most of us, we rarely ever follow the ‘perfect’ plan. We all have bad days. We all have moments of ‘weakness’. We all have to ‘indulge’ every once in a great while. We all are human (at least the last time I checked). Let’s make something perfectly clear, these ‘moments’ are neither good or bad. They just are. They become what you want them to become. These moments can either make you human or these moments can be the end-all-to-be-all.

You can have a ‘moment’ and simply chalk it up to being human with human tendencies, or you can have a moment that wrecks your psychological mind set and destroys your confidence and drive.

So depending on how many of these moments you have, your perceived goal will be extended from a short time frame of (let’s say) 3 months to more like 6 or 8 months (and maybe longer).

Your goal and your lifestyle follow a very simple checks and balances system that is rooted in mathematics (AGAIN). It’s all about the payback.

In order to move forward you must have more ‘acts’ in the positive column than the negative column. If you have more negatives than positives you will of course fall down the hill instead of climbing forward. And if you have an equal number of positives and negatives you will simply stay in the current ‘state’ of health and fitness you are in. SO in order to move forward on your journey, you must ‘payback’ yourself at least one more positive act then every negative act you perform. Once again weight loss is truly a simple math equation

Here’s the most difficult part of the payback.

You’re positives ‘acts’ will never be equivalent to your negative acts. (What the hell does that mean?)

It all comes back to – "You can’t out-train a bad diet". No matter how hard you train, no matter how many hours you sacrifice exercising, ‘busting your ass’, and sweating, your eating habits severely outweigh your movements.

It’s all about the calories folks. Calories you consume and calories burned. It really is that simple. It’s the calories consumed that ALWAYS trumps the calories burned.

Just because you ‘ran your ass off’ at the gym for 20 min 30 min 60 min 90 min does not mean you ‘burned off’ the calories you consumed the night before day before week before.

There is no better way to explain this than to watch one of the many videos that Craig created. After watching ANY of these videos it’s painfully obvious why what you eat grossly outweighs what you do.

It’s all about the payback.

So does this mean you won’t achieve your ultimate goal? Does this mean that if you slip up and eat the wrong foods, or re-visit a bad eating habit that you are bound for failure.

NO.

It only tells you that your goal is now farther to reach. It means your goal will take longer to achieve. And unfortunately there is no way of quantifying the difference. Basically the journey’s time frame has been extended.

It’s up to you how long you want the journey to be. Everything you eat has a destination (fuel or fat).

It’s up to you where it lands.

Carpe Diem
